Looking for a File Manager kind of app
Can someone please point me to an app designed to speed up the manual cleaning up of the (many hundreds of) files on a harddrive?
Specifically, I’m looking for an app that will allow me to do these kinds of things in an efficient way:
• Select a specific folder and file type (say C:\grape\*. doc)
• View a listing of all the doc files within that folder
• Select a particular file and view it
Then either
a. Delete or retain it or move it to another folder and then move to the next file on the list; or
b. Rename it and move it to another folder and then move to the next file on the list.
I can do those things now without any special app but I find that I waste a lot of time and key strokes after viewing one file before moving to the next file.
Thanks for your suggestions. FWIMBW, my pc uses XP. .....wdc

I use the free version of XYplorer
http://www.xyplorer.com/free.php
It's pretty intuitive and can be set up to be a simple interface or more complex depending on the features you do/don't want to use regularly.
It's much closer to earlier versions of Windows own file managers than the newer Windows viewers are. That's also one of the reasons why I like it.

Fink: Re xyplorer,do you know of a tutorial on how to use it? Like many other Helps this one may be a good summary of the app’s features but I find it a terrible learning tool.
If you have the patience, can you tell me how to:
• Print out the displayed listing of files (and file characteristics) within a selected folder..
• Print out a digital copy of the same listing, one that that I can send by email.
• Mark files in a listing for subsequent deleting. – Now, after viewing a file and deciding to delete it I find I cannot do so, as the file “is in use.” Having to close xyexplorer each time and then return to it is so inefficient. There must be a better way --- that I have overlooked? Perhaps it involves the Clipboard?
• How does the Clipboard work in xyplorer>
Thank you. ... wdc

I have never done those things. Have you had a look at the help file in the program yet?
Whenever I've done a file search by highliting the folder I want to search in the left pane and clicking the search icon (magnifying glass) the search window opens at the bottom of the xyplorer window and I commence my search. The found files are listed and I can manipulate them as I wish. I have never had issues deleting them directly from there just by hiliting each one individually or using the ctrl key and hiliting more than one or selecting the top and bottom files while holding the shift key to hilite all files in between those two.
I'm unsure what you mean by the clipboard question.

<<I'm unsure what you mean by the clipboard question.>> In xyplorer File/To Clipboard
What does clicking To Clipboard do? I think it might mean -- placing the viewed listing on a space called Clipboard. But I am not sure, am confused. ..wdc

It means copy the details of the specific info chosen...eg- path to file, file name etc. It's just more options other than right click>copy which copies the actual file itself to memory (clipboard).
Clipboard is the name Windows uses for the memory space used to store what is copied/cut and ready to paste in a location of your choice.
