Anything i can do to fix?
Replace the hard drive and run the restore discs. It's not a software problem; it's a hardware problem.

NP. Sorry to give you bad news. But this is why I asked you to run diags before we went further.
Hard to say if they knew. If they're not tech savvy, it's possible that they didn't know it was a hardware problem. They could have thought it was software.

I expect he knew then. He seemed to have a bit of a back room business reselling laptops going on.

If that's the case, maybe you can ask for a replacement hard drive or a partial refund.
