screen goes off when i plug in an external hdd
hello,
when i plug in my usb powered 1 tb western digital screen goes off, and the light on my monitor starts to flash. system sounds working but i can do nothing about it except for restarting from power button.
when i start my computer with the external plugged it freezes one or two times but it works eventually.
i have some other external hdd (1 tb - plugged and 320 gb - usb powered) and flash disks, but none of them are like that.
i'm using my computer for years, and it started to do that recently. it had a power supply problem 1 or 2 years ago, and i changed it. could it be a power supply issue?
thanks for your helps in advance.

Sounds like your power supply isn't enough to provide power to all your computer parts and your external drives. Do you know the wattage? Input your computer parts in the calculator below and it will tell you how much power you need:

To see if above device is source of issue,
Test that external drive on another verified working system.
Cheers.

@shinma: my external drive works fine on my laptop.
@photolady: i suspect my power supply is the problem too. but the weird thing is, nothing have changed but it started to make problem. maybe my drive has more data than it used to...

Closely inspect the USB port you're plugging it into to make sure it isn't damaged somehow. If the contacts inside it get crossed up and touch each other, it can take out a power supply and motherboard.
