Burn software in windows 7
I have a hard drive I need to burn about 30 gigs of data. I have the drive slaved in my system now. Is there a way in windows 7 to burn this data to DVD and break it down to 4 gigs per disk? I am trying to help a person save all their pictures and movies after their computer motherboard went south. Tom

If you need to, you can split large files into DVD sized chunks using WinRar. Other compression software probably does the same thing, but that's the one I use.

If I use the WinRar method will the person that will be opening these files need the same program to open it. The reason I ask is the person that wants all her pictures and movies does not have internet and live 30 miles from me. I want to make it as simple as I can when I burn then files where she can copy and paste to her laptop. Thanks for the help. Tom

Can't you just drag & drop the files onto the DVD, (in Windows Explorer)? Then when the DVD is full, insert another blank DVD and repeat with the next batch of files?
How about a 32GB USB flash/thumb drive, like this:

Fill it up, send it to her.

If you choose ZIP as the output format, then Windows will be able to open the files without needing any 3rd party software.

The total files is 37 gigs. I tried the send to method and sent them to DVD and that said my files were to big. How much space would the compression method save? I do not have time to burn 10 DVDs. They do not want to spend any money buying the USB drive so I guess I am stuck with burning to DVD. Thanks for the help. tom

Well graphics are pretty well compressed, so zipping them will not help out.

Burning 10 dvds takes less than an hour. You are spending more time researching for a solution to your problem than it would take to burn the data.
Anyway, here's another solution: You can shrink the partition and in the free space available create a secondary partition in wich you'll copy the data.
BTW, I wonder what happened to my post count, in the years I didn't show on the board, it went down by a factor of 10.

glussier, I wonder why you think I am spending more time searching for an answer than it would take to burn? Who said I was in a hurry? because there is no hurry on this just to let you know. It may take me a year, who knows but at least I learn. Tom

Then, I gave you an alternative which won't cost you or the disk owner a penny.
Also, if it doesn't matter if it takes you a year, it means that she doesn't need the drive to put back in the system. So, why don't you install that drive as slave on her revised computer and just copy the data over to their other drive?

She wants them on DVDs. Its no big deal as I am retired and have plenty of time. She also has a laptop so I would have to buy an Enclosure and her money is low. I will get to it one day. She just has a few years worth of pictures and video's of her children she does not want to loose. Tom

When we went from the old bulletin board to this system, a lot of us took a hit on the post count. And lost a lot of the old 98 post. Long time no see!

Since 2002, I posted 5 or 6 times. I got tired of replying to mostly the same questions again, again.... I think that, I got tired of being a mod. Didn't like too much policing user's thread. Also, in 2002, I was going in early retirement, and had more time to spend travelling and taking care of my grand kids.
The hit on the post count, sure doesn't show much on yours.
How are you doing? What happened to Big John?
