Resolved [RESOLVED] Cannot Open Inbox in Outlook Express

    Hi,
I use Outlook Express and cannot open the inbox. There are 160 messages showing there. I have Windows XP home addition with sp3. Any help would be appreciated! Let me know if you need more info.

Try either compacting or deleting the folder.dbx as described in these two links. http://social.answers.microsoft.com/...5-a40940aec062
    http://social.answers.microsoft.com/...8-09502093b370
If no success, perhaps some ideas here
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...orruption.mspx

Once you have an inboxold.dbx file, you may be able to recover the contained messages and export them into your new inbox.dbx. (The following is from http://www.skud.net/board/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=57 )
"Importing your Outlook Express email messages

A step by step guide to help you to import your saved email into Outlook Express.

Close all programs running on the system.

    Click Start.

    Click Programs.

    Click Outlook Express.

Click on the File menu located at the top of the Outlook Express screen.

    Scroll down and select Import.

    Scroll across and select Messages.

Outlook Express will then request you to choose the type of mail files they are.

Select the version of Outlook Express that you have installed and click Next.

Outlook Express will then ask if you want to import from a main identity or a mail store.

Only select the Outlook Express Store Folder option if you have moved your *.dbx files after exporting them. If you have moved your *.dbx files to another folder then select the Outlook Express Store Folder option and point Outlook Express to the folder that contains the *.dbx files that you want to import. Otherwise, leave the default setting and import your email from your main identity. If you have multiple identities you will be prompted to choose which identity you want to import your email from."

If you are willing spend $27 this might help, though there may be a trial period.

    Thanks for the replies!
Sorry about taking so long to reply. It is not my computer and I was only able to get there today. So I went to the site Ridgerunr suggested and was working my way through the fix . When I got to a step where I had to type in a line to access a file it said there was no such file. No matter what I tried I could not get passed this step. So then I tried reloading windows(I know you don't like doing that) but the same error message came up and again the fix stopped at the same point. So then I tried downloading gmail and set up an account hoping maybe to transfer the 160 plus emails in the inbox to it. Gmail says it will not transfer Outlook Express.

pipercub--You can import email messages from OE to GMail
    http://email.about.com/od/gmailtips/...E_in_Gmail.htm
    http://www.ehow.com/how_2272690_impo...ail-gmail.html

But have you given up on OE? Did you try the procedures in my last post? Compacting could be the fix to the original problem of not being able to read the inbox.dbx file.

Another way to read messages in a .dbx file is to use DBXtract. An old but free version is

Thank you for all the replies! As usual Virtual Dr. is the best and the problemis solved!!!!!!!!! I used Welshjim's reccomendation of the first link and got down to the step where it said to rename the file to "inbosold.dbx" and restarted outlook express and all the messages came and the inbox opened them all. I didn't have to follow the rest of the instructions! Thankyou, thankyou. You made my day and Johns also!
