Resolved [RESOLVED] New hdd / drive letters

    Hi there,

This may sound complex but it should not be. Running XP Pro sp2.

Old hdd (os plus five partitions; c, d, e, etc.) is filling up so am putting in a new 500gb hdd. Have copied an image of the os to the new c: and it is working fine. Using Partition Magic, I created the new partitions, etc, etc.

PM has allocated different drive letters and I want to change them back to d, e, f, etc. Used the PM Drive Mapper tool, rebooted and there is no change. So tried to do so under Control Panel/Disk Management/Change Drive Letter/Add.

And here's the thing; d, e, f etc are not listed, which probably explains why Drive Mapper did zilch. However, D, E, F etc are all listed under Drive Mapper.

So how do I revert to the previous drive letters?

Really grateful for any advice. Thank in advance,

    Rex

The reason D, E, F are not listed in Disk Management is that they are already in use.
You first have to change the drive letters of the old disk to K, L, M or whatever is available.
Disk Management/Change Drive Letter/Change (not Add)
D,E,F will be available then for your new disk.
Next you can change the old disk drive letters to G, H, I if you prefer.

You may need to first change the drive letter for the DVD drive(s) and any card readers that are attached before D:, E: and F: become available.

What I do. Go into Disk Management and remove all drive letters except C:\ .Re-assign letters to each partition and cd/dvd drive(s) in order...
    Stupid question? No such thing!

    Thanks for the replies.

DeP, I agree that C, D, E, etc are in use, but that drive is not currently installed. So presumably, the new drive should show those drive letters? Or am I missing something?

I have not done anything to the old drive (yet) so can still operate until the new one has all the data copied. Then I will fiddle around to get the drive letters as I want them.

Found an MS article that suggested doing a reg hack (HKLM/System/Mounted Devices/DosDevices and rename as necessary.

Did that and we are now up and running.

    Thanks,

    Rex
