Can I live without .NET?
Here Microsoft goes again - telling me that I "need" .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982524). I do not even have Windows Server 2003 but I'm not sure if I have XP x86 (don't even know what it is). Sheesh, I'm exhausted just from typing the name of this update! But seriously, why do I as Joe Average, Computer User and Surfer of the Internet and World Wide Web really need .NET anything? I think I know that .NET is primarily a great (supposedly.....?) tool for developers, which I am not, and I also think that I know that .NET, in it's many Framework incarnations (versions) helps my other PC programs to work (Ask Leo ref.).
So, do I really "need" all of this .NET cr, er, stuff?
.NET Framework 1.1
.NET Framework 1.1 Security Update
.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
.NET Framework CLR
.NET Framework CA
.NET Framework ASP .NET
.NET Framework CRT
.NET Framework PreXP
.NET Framework 2
.NET Framework WinForms
.NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2
.NET Framework 3.5 SP1
Hotfix for Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 (KB958484)
Hotfix for Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 (KB953595)
Hotfix for Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 (KB963707)

Probably not.
But I do have a program that needs all that mess.
CDBurnerXP does require .network 3.5 if I remember right.
So, should you not have a program that require it. No need to install any.

Take note of the word AND
Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86
Its been a while but I believe video card drivers/apps need some of the .net..
I'd leave it as is...You could spend weeks trying to figure out which ones you really need and which ones you don't. Then there's the part about uninstalling might not go well.
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

The .NET components that you get from Windows Update are the runtimes for programs that were written in one of the .NET languages. As time goes on they are becoming more and more common. Any program that requires the .NET Framework should soon moan if it isn't installed, so basically, if nothing complains then you don't need the Framework.
However, if you have any of the Frameworks installed, you should install any updates for them, for security reasons.

I gave up the fight last year. IMO, if you are going to use Windows, you should probably have .NET Framework. Some of the very best researchers Microsoft has available http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/e...w/default.mspx have worked on .NET Framework. So IMO, it's not going away...

Did M$ come out with this .NET Framework stuff
when they got sued for altering java, and decided to reinvent the wheel?

Mainly it was designed so programs would not come up with errors like they once did.

.NET Framework http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework The use of it seems to be growing more and more. From comments I've read, many amateur programmers really like using it.

Many professional programmers like using it too. It really has made life a lot easier, and made programs more reliable too

I'm not a programmer, I have XP Pro SP3, and I don't know which programs use it. Is it OK to leave in old versions, or remove them as we did with Java?

Family Tree Maker with XP as the OS required all of them.
With Vista as the OS, just 3.5 is required. Crazy.

This whole .NET pile of excrement is just another example of Microsoft Bloatware. Would I need .NET if I switched to Ubuntu (I probably won't switch anytime soon but I have considered it)?
After I caved and installed .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982524) MS' Update is giving me this optional .NET Framework 4 Client Profile for Windows XP x86 (KB982670). This seems to be applicable mostly for developers but I honestly cannot tell from the description.
