    Running Process's in Windows 7?

Just out of curiosity, I was wondering how many process's people have running with Windows 7. I was quite shocked when I installed Vista some years ago and saw this number at around 72 originally. I trimmed it down to around 41 right away, but noticed Win 7 started at about 54 (upgrade install), and the best I can get it down to is around 46 by turning off unnecessary services and startup programs.

    What about everybody else ?

I learned not to mess with Services some time ago, the problem is that there are so many interdependencies that you often cause something else so break without realising. As a result, my Win7 Ultimate x64 is currently running 74 processes. I'm bound to say that I never noticed any performance difference even back when I did disable stuff, running Vista on much slower hardware than my current main rig (and you'd expect to see an improvement more with Vista than Win7).

You're quite correct Sparks. Mucking about with Windows Services can be hazardous, but there are quite a few of them that I would never use and I can see no reason to leave them running.

As for the performance gain before and after....probably negligible if any, but it's the OCD in me that I feel I need to keep my machines lean and mean at all times . It's like useless clutter even if there is no appreciable difference afterwards.

Wouldn't the number of services vary depending on the system, attached peripherals, installed software and user preference?

Oh absolutely....I didn't mean to ask as if this were a contest or something.
I was just curious as to what other Win 7 systems were running.

And the number of processes is not necessarily directly related to the Services started...are they ?

In my experience, Windows Vista & 7 definitely run more than XP. On my Dell Win 7 netbook as I type this, I have 54 processes running. And it's about as lean as I can make it.

And that would include, tskmgr.exe itself of course, plus if you have your browser open to post, in my case using Google Chrome, I have 3 entries for the browser alone.

What really gets me is the 13 instances of svchost.exe . I know those are almost always necessary. I also know that some rogue software will disguise themselves here.

    SpywareDr,

Thanks for reminding me about this program. I've been using it for years, but it's been a while since I've updated it. Now I have the latest version.

Much more informative than the standard Windows Task Manager.
