    Windows Update Hosed

    My windows update doesn't work. When I click on express or custom I get the following:
    The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view....Error number: 0x800706D3
    I have gone to the MS support site and Google and have tried everything I could find regarding the above message and error code to "fix" this issue but nothing has worked. Even reinstalled SP4. If anyone has any ideas on how to resolve this issue they are greatly appreciated. I have checked Automatic Updates and Background Intelligent Services and they are OK. I have done all the regsvr32 commands from various recommendations and they didn't work. I have put the MS web sites in the trusted folder and have done a host of other things. All active X items are enabled. I have no firewalls and am not running Zone Alarm. Have no spyware and have used Registry Mechanic to make sure the registry is OK, but maybe it's missing something...who knows at this point. Have also installed Windows Installer 3.1. Anyway, thanxs in advance for your help.

    1. Download Windows Update Fix to your desktop.
    Double click on downloaded file, and allow registry merge.
    Restart computer.

    If it doesn't help...

    2. Download, and run Windows Update Repair Tool: http://software.hitoma.com/WURT/
    To download the tool, click on I Agree link.
    Restart computer, when done.

    Tried both suggestions Broni and neither worked. Thanx anyway, Guess I'll just have to do a reinstall of the OS sometime down the road. I've tried everything under the sun that I've found online and as MS support. Don't know if there's a solution out there or not.

    Or there may be a strong possibility that you have a Vundo infection, which
    is usually accompanied by ZLOB and/or SDBot infections, all of which are
    protected by a rootkit.


    Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
    to an appropriate forum.

    Yes I've done that too. I also have VirusScan Enterprise 8.5 and do a daily scan and haven't had any issues for a long time. Also run spyware protection daily.

    After registering and installing those files I ran update again and it didnt' work but produced the following log: Maybe these logs will help determine what's not working right...it's a tad beyond me. Thanx for the help!

    Try couple more things....

    1. Start/Run and type in the box
    regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
    OK

    Repeat the above for all of the following dlls
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll
