Create new user with Administrative rights: http://uis.georgetown.edu/software/d....accounts.html, and try to update from there.

One other suggestion Ive come across relates GetUserTokenFromSessionId failed may be caused by a permissions issue. So if Broni`s solution does not cure it try the following
1. START /RUN type DCOMCNFG
2. Click on the Default Security Tab
3. Under Default Access Permissions click on Edit
4. If the list is blank, then verify that Administrator is in the list. Add it if necessary by clicking ADD then click on ADMINISTRATOR and then click OK.

Tried both and no luck. Administrator is listed under Default Access Permissions. This bites. Can't imagine why I'm getting that GetUserTokenFromSessionId failed error.

Go Start>Run, type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have Windows CD handy.

Did the scannow, rebooted and still no connection with update. Got AU Client Update Tool v7.7e and ran it, rebooted and tried to run update, hit the express button and got "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view...error 0x800704DD" At least I'm getting a different error code. I made a change after I looked up the error code on the MS Support site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910341. The Client for MS Networks wasn't installed. Not sure why I need it since I have a stand alone computer and I'm using TCP/IP. Also checked the registry values from the KB910341 and everything was OK. I"m always logged on as Administrator to that shouldn't be an issue. Anyway, if you could look at the log output below and have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Been working on this issue for a couple of weeks and I'm tired of it. At the point of a reinstall if I can't get it fixed by the end of this week.

Read through : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910338 I do not have a Windows Resource Kit/Tools. I'm running a stand alone computer with W2K and Sp4. Went to the MS support and there are a variety of tools listed that can be downloaded individually. Don't know which one/s I need.

I can see, only one extra tool: Subinacl utility, is needed, and it applies only to step 4.

Downloaded it and ran it. not sure what it did. Went to run the cmd prompt and copied and pasted the command sequence and it said "sc is not recognized as an internal or external commande. That step for is for a server which I'm not.

There are 6 steps at the above link. Did you go through all of them?

I get an error message when I try to do the cmd string in #4 for w2k. It says "subinacl is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. The executable subinacl is in the proper directory.

Did you go through steps 1-3, first, or you just jumped to #4?

- Click Start | Run, type cmd and press [Enter].
- At the cmd prompt, type in (or copy & paste) the following command and then press [Enter]:
Code:
cd C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools
(Your cmd prompt should now reflect the fact that you are in the "C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" folder).
- Type in (or copy & paste) the following command and press [Enter]:
Code:
Subinacl /service wuauserv /sddl=D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)
- Type in exit and press [Enter] to close the cmd window.

Was able to complete all 6 steps, rebooted, ran update and when I clicked on Express got the same error. Service WARNING: GetUserTokenFromSessionId failed with error 800704dd for session 0. As an FYI if I set AU to run at a specific time it works...go figure. That still doesn't help me as I know I have about 2 dozen updates that need to be installed.
