copying .exe files from one machine to another

Is it safe to copy and paste C:\WINDOWS\system32\alg.exe from my laptop into my desktop. they both have xp sp2? and the one in the desktop might be a trojan.

Submit the one you think may be infected here..

    http://virusscan.jotti.org/

to be multiscanned. What makes you think it's infected? If it is then simply replacing it wouldn't be the way to fix the problem since whatever infected it may still be lurking on the PC.

Let us know the results of the scan.

If the file is located in C:\WINDOWS\system32, it should be safe, but double checking by following fink's advice won't hurt.
