Vundo Vista Infection - Please Help!

Google, Hotmail, Facebook, MySpace did not work a few days ago. I was also getting tons of popups. Norton did not detect anything. Windows defender picked up that I had a Trojan/Vundo. It would scan, "fix" problem and I would have to re-start but then it would detect it again. It has stopped detecting it, but my icons in all folders have disappeared as well as my desktop background. In addition I have noticed general windows slowness. Obviously there is still something there.

I followed the instructions given in this thread. I ran Spybot (which detected problems but could not fix them) and Windows defender does not detect issues anymore.

First I ran the Malaware and then HJT, below are the logs. Please let me know what I should do from here.

Uninstall all previous versions of Java through Add\Remove.

*** Download, and run QuickTime Killer: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...e-Killer.shtml
After downloading, double click on EnGraphQuickTimeKillerInstaller.msi file.
QuickTime Killer will remove QuickTime from start up and kill any running QuickTime processes. This application runs silently at start up and closes itself as soon as it takes care of QuickTime. QuickTime itself won't be removed from your computer, and will be available whenever needed.

*** Disable TeaTimer, as it'll interfere with the cleaning process:
Right click Spybot's TeaTimer System Tray Icon.
Click Exit Spybot-S&D Resident.
TeaTimer closes.

*** Disable Windows Defender, as it'll interfere with cleaning process:
- Open Windows Defender by clicking the [b]Start[/b, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Defender.
- Click Tools

- Click General Settings

Enable Windows Defender, when all cleaning is done.

I am unable to get QuickTime Killer, when trying to install it it tells me that I need to get Net Framework Version 1.1.4322, which I cant find! there are no links to download that specific version from the page it directs me to and the other versions still wont allow QuickTime Killer to install.

When I try and install Net Framework, a message pops up that says the upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.

It looks like all HJT entries, I asked you to "fix" in my post #2, are still there.
What happened?

when I start the HJT I clicked on the button "none of the above, just start the program"
then I click "scan"

A window pops up saying "for some reason your system denied write access to the hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HiJack this may NOT be able to fix this. If that happened, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this click start, run and type:
notepad C:\\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
and press enter. find the line(s) hijack this reports and delete them. save the file as 'hosts' (with quotes) and reboot

for vista, simply exit hijackthis, right click on the hjt icon choose 'run as administrator'

So i ran as adminstrator, did the same steps you told me to do in post #2, except *O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background, was not there to check off.

Your computer is clean

1. Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html.
Run CCleaner.

2. Turn off System Restore:

- Windows XP:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore".
5. Click Apply.
6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
7. Click OK.
- Windows Vista:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C:")
7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
8. Click OK

3. Restart computer.

4. Turn System Restore on.

5. Download, and install McAfee SiteAdvisor: http://www.siteadvisor.com/download/ff.html. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.
