[MCE] SFC Asks for Windows XP SP2 CD
If I run SFC /SCANNOW from either Start > Run or Start > Run > CMD
It starts of and promptly displays a box stating
Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache.
Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD now.
I have a Dell OEM DVD with Windows XP Media Edition combined with SP2 on it.
The DVD is named XP_MCE_SP2_ENG.
There is no option to point to a specific directory so I can't redirect it.

Nix
Just keep hitting "cancel" and it might decide to run
If that does not work, do you have an i386 folder in C:\?

No it doesn't and after about 100 I got sick of hitting cancel.
No I don't have th I386 folder on the C: drive or any other drive for that matter.
It's on the DVD though.

Try this first
The "Insert CD" message has only an OK and Cancel button.
Press OK, allowing it to fail.
The next dialog will ask you to provide the location of the CD-ROM so try redirecting it now to the DVD .
If that does not work
Copy i386 into the root of C so that you have
C:\i386
Then you will have to change the path in the registry to point to C:\i386
Open regedit and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
You will see various entries here on the right hand side. The one you want is called:
SourcePath
It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive,
You need to change it to:
C:\
Double click the SourcePath setting and a new box will pop up allowing you to make the change.
Now restart your computer and try it out
This time click OK again allowing it to fail and type in the full path of the i386 directory on the hard drive

Nix--If you follow dunedin's suggestion, you might also want to change (if it is not already so set) the ServicePackSourcePath to C:\.
This time click OK again allowing it to fail and type in the full path of the i386 directory on the hard drive
I am not sure what dunedin meant by this, especially the bolded/underlined part. If you have both SourcePaths set to C:\, (which is the full path of the I386 folder) you should not be asked for the CD, and you should not insert it unless requested.
P.S. In the unlikely circumstance that you are asked to insert it, clicking Retry (even as many as 50 times) should allow the SFC procedure to proceed. As you know SFC does have a progress bar, but at the end, it just disappears. No message of success.

Yes Jim I got carried away with the "full path"
You need only type C:\ for the full path

One other thing you can try is D/L SP2,
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Extracted it to a folder and burn it to a CD
The burn to cd is optional!
This has worked for me in the past
