Excel does not close properly
I have excel 2003 running in a windows xp environment that basically
locks itself into whatever mode you are running. For example, if I go into an
excel document and try to highlight some cells, it does not allow me to stop
the highlight, and does not even allow me to exit excel.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling excel as well without any luck.
I have also tried pulling the add-ons and the .xlb files to no result.
Any ideas would definitely be welcome
Thanks in advance

;-)
Hit the (Esc) button to escape from edit/copy mode in excel

hitting the escape key or any key does not work. You end up "locked" into that mode, and it won't even let you log out of excel.

When it locks up, can you access any of the menu options like Help? If so, try a detect and repair, under Help on the menu bar.

Have you got a stuck CTRL key on your keyboard?

Nope - all keys are functioning *properly* with no sticking either on the keyboard or the mouse. Definitely not hardware related.
Are there any control files somewhere that set the defaults up that have to be manually cleared out before a re-install can take place ? I've tried
uninstalling, reinstalling, detect and repair [as Rocky said to Bullwinkle "that
trick never works..."], tried using the [F8] key to see if it was in extended mode, tried going into macros and there were no macros laying around causing havoc. Went into Excel.exe /safe mode and the problem still
occurs. Definitely a stubborn problem.

Try running "Detect and repair" from the Help menu.

I tried "detect and repair" more than once. Nope, no joy - just blows up the outlook client among other things I don't want to do that anymore to it.

the solution
This can be closed, but thought I'd let you know the outcome:
Since this was in windows XP, I ended up re-creating the user profile, which cleared out the previous settings.
This forced the recreation of the original environment beautifully. I know this was using a bazooka to kill a fly, but hey it sure felt good

Thanks to another post today, we can put the bazooka away because here is the flyswat solution for the next time:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307812
Method 2: Check for extend-selection mode
The extend-selection option changes mouse and arrow key functionality in the following manner. If you use the mouse to click a cell, all the cells between the previously selected cell and the cell that you are currently trying to click are now selected. If you press an arrow key, the previously selected cell and the adjacent cell in the direction of the arrow key are now selected. If you are seeing this behavior and EXT is shown in the Excel status bar, you can press the F8 key to turn off the extend-selection option.

I'm sorry to say that I did try that one before I bazooka'd, and it didn't work....ah well. The person is a very happy camper now though
