    Notepad within Win 2k

I typed a short text file using notepad. Every time I go to open up that file, I recieve a open with message box and I have to go down the list of programs in the box and choose notepad. There is a line at the bottom of box with a small box that says " always use this program to open these files" but, it doesn't give me the option to select it. How come and why do I recieve this message every time I try to open a notepad file? What can I do to avoid this when opening a file using notepad?

Go to the My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types tab, find TXT in the list then click on Change button, choose Notepad and check the "Always use..." checkbox in there. Hopefully that'll restore it's behaviour.

supersparks, I guess I choose the wrong word to use. It is actually not a txt file. The name under type next to this file says "file." I am not sure exactly what type "file" type files are. I didn't see anything that says file in the list under file types tab.

It sounds as if it's had it's file extension deleted, in which case it's no big deal, just rename it adding .txt to the end and it will open in Notepad by default.

You may need to go into My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View and uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types". It's always better to show the file extension anyway, it helps avoid the "double extension" trick used by some malware wrires.

Thanks, Supersparks. Changing extension to "txt" worked like a charm. And to think I was putting up with this for soo long. I learn something new on here every day (more like every minute). Supersparks, you sure are super. The name fits you well. Thanks again.
