    Running Linux and Windows 7

I am presently running Windows 7 Pro on my machine but I want to try Linux and run both operating systems.i have already saved Linux Mint cinnamon 64 bit on a partition of my hard drive and backed everything else up.
Now ,I am completely new at this so what do I do now in order to begin using Linux in my machine and be able to boot to either O.S.

The first thing I would do is to try Linux out without installing it and changing anything on your computer which takes a bit of work to dual boot with Windows. You can create a bootable live Linux USB system and run it to see if you like it. It would be slower than it would be if installed directly on the hard drive but is a good fail safe way to explore Linux. USB 3.0 would be much faster than 2.0 of course if your computer is 3.0 capable.

Well here is one you may like., it is the only version of Ubuntu I like.
    http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...Lite-2-6-Final

AntiX-15 is what I am running right now.
    http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...iX-15-released

Lexar USB 3.0 at 8MB are what I use.
I use Unetbootin to make the bootable
    http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
I make a folder that I place both Unetbootin and the ISO that I download.
You can follow the intruction in the link.

Use F12, F11 on MSI motherboards, to access the boot menu to select the usb stick.

Well,I finally regained enough strength to return to my computer!I loaded Linux Mint on a USB drive ,reset my BIOS to run from the drive and have looked at the operating system a little. So far I like what I see but I have a lot of questions. If I run Linux Mint on the net all the time what virus protection do I need? How compatible are Libre Office and Windows Office programs? And finally ,how do I now set my computer to boot to either Windows or Linux? Thanks for all the help!

When using a USB stick, I use F12, MSI motherboards uses F11, to select what I want to boot from.
But have known to do like you did to select which drive to boot to in the BIOS.

My Toshiba looks like this when I use the F12 key while booting up

I arrow down to the USB device and hit enter.

LibreOffice allows you to save in lots of options. So watching what you save as, I. E. basically other than the default and M$ office should have no problem opening it. But, I uninstalled all the M$ office junk and only use LibreOffice. In Window and Linux.

Antivirus programs do exist, just I never have used any.

Glad things are better for you!

For a hard disk install of Linux I'd be much more inclined to do it within a Virtual Machine in Windows. Dual booting fully installed Linux and Windows of any version(s) is not easy to set up because they basically don't recognize each other. You'd generally require 3rd party software to set it up and frankly whenever I've tried in the past it never did work all that well. Or at all.

Others here might have specific suggestions and more experience setting up a dual hard drive boot but I can't because it just never worked all that well for me.

There may, however, be new versions of Linux now available that I'm not aware of that do have the capability of setting up it's own dual boot.. again others might have more insight than me.

That is the best way to do it.

I just bought a small SSD and installed Linux on it and switch the cables depending on which OS I want to boot from.

Linux can see and work with Windows, but Windows can not see any Linux stuff.
