success i took the laptop to a friend house and it worked fine i had a time with the dvd as none of the ones i had would work so i just used a flash drive long story short ubuntu wouldn't connect...

my isp is spectrum and my phone is tracfone but i what i failed to say was that the phone was on wifi so i was using the internet i don't know how much of a difference this makes
