[RESOLVED] Trying to Format a Hard Drive

Windows 11 Pro
RAM 16GB
i7 CPU 2.67 GH

I have a 1 TB Seagate SATA hard drive That I am trying to format. It is connected as the second hard drive on the computer. When I try to format it I was told to deselect quick format. After an hour or two I get the message "Windows was unable to complete the format". If I click on "cancel" I get this message, "The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required filesystem drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupt". I am then lost. I also noticed that after I plugged in the hard drive and went into the BIOS I had Master and slave reading "0". I don't know if that means anything. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure the drive is good? If not, I'd run a hard drive test in Seatools first.

You should run the Long test, not just the Short test.

If the long test is successful, use Disk Management to reformat the drive. You could also delete the existing partitions on the drive and create a new one.

If I try to format the drive unselecting the fast format I get this message when the format procedure is done. "G:\ is not accessible. The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted." I am trying to send a screen shot but am not sure how to do it. I click on the icon "insert image" and select the screenshot file I want to send. It says I have exceeded the capacity by 209 kb and so it won't include the file in the post.

I don't know if any of that helps.

Click on Go Advanced and then Manage Attachments and you should be able to remove some old attachments that you no longer need from older posts to free up some space for new attachments.

Once you have formatted the drive, you would need to create a partition in Disk Management.

What did you previously have on the Seagate drive?

If anything, you could delete the G: partition, and then create a new NTFS one.

To remove attachments I "Go Advanced" then "Manage Attachments". And then I don't know how to delete the existing snapshots.

I don't know what I was doing wrong. I did do step 5 and after trying to format which took over an hour I got the message and it was not formatted. I did this about three times. I tried it again this evening and it is now formatted!!! I'm sure it was me doing something wrong. So thank you very much!
