Cakewalk Sonar too slow to use

I used a utility called Why So Slow to do a quick check on the system. It said I had a very cool setup and everything is working as it should with clock speed at 4,700.

But in Sonar, I press the space bar and the cursor takes 6 or 7 seconds to respond. I may well have problems with the required buffer sizes but that can't completely account for it because I'm working in a file with almost no content. When the project does play, it stalls with 'Dropout' as the cause soon after.

I've seen Sonar get slow when the project is stored on an external drive but that's not the case here.
