HP Envy laptop has issues
I am working on an HP Envy 15 x360 laptop with Windows 8.1 that is exhibiting some strange symptoms.
When it first boots, no desktop icons appear. After about an hour or so, they may suddenly appear, only to disappear again later. If you try to open Windows Explorer and navigate to a folder with files, you get the spinning wheel icon and the slowly advancing progress bar, but no files ever appear even in a folder where some exist. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Firefox all work fine. You can run system applications like Control Panel, Event Viewer, Task Manager, and some installed applications as well, however, if you try to save or download and save a file, the Save As dialog hangs. SpeedFan reports no issues with the hard drive S.M.A.R.T. info however, so I don't think the hard drive is the problem. I enabled the hidden administrator account, and it has some, although not all of the same issues. The desktop icons for that account appeared, only disappearing briefly. I was able to save a copy of part of the System log from Event Viewer, although the Save As dialog did not allow creating a new folder without hanging. That log is below. One of the items not in the partial saved log was "The speed of processor x in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 538964 seconds since the last report." This was repeated for all 4 processor cores (Intel i7).
Any ideas as to how to get this system back to operating normally would be appreciated.
