Yes I did Fat 32
Doesn't look like you did a FAT 32 partition as Mosaic1 is asking. You'll need to go back to fdisk and choose to delete the primary partition. Then go back to Create... and make sure you choose FAT 32. That's probably why you're getting that boot error on format--won't recognize the partition. Was that on that sheet? Read carefully. No rush here, OK?
It's asking me to enter Volume label
??
I am deleting the partition to start over.
You have 2/1/01 just before I enter for the Fat 32. It has no place to put that. Was I supposed to type that somewhere?
From the sheet:
"Do you wish to enable large disk support?
If you want to use FAT32 file system (AND YES, YOU DO), 2/1/01 and then press enter."
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 02-06-2001).]
After your done, before formatting, post back the info you get on that drive like before---under "System" it should say FAT32.
That document I sent obviously got corrupted in the transfer, or your "old" computer screwed it up. Here it is from that point on:
Do you wish to enable large disk support?
If you want to use the FAT32 file system (AND YES, YOU DO), press Y and then press ENTER.
4. Press Y, then Enter (just like it SAID to do....)
5. After you press ENTER, the following Fdisk Options menu is displayed:
1. Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive
2. Set active partition
3. Delete partition or Logical DOS Drive
4. Display partition information
5. Change current fixed disk drive
(Note that option 5 is available only if you have two physical hard disks in the computer).
6. Press 1 to select the Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive menu option, and then press ENTER.
7. Press 1 to select the Create Primary DOS Partition menu option, and then press ENTER.
8. After you press ENTER, you receive the following message:
Do you wish to use the maximum available size for primary DOS partition?
9. Press Y, and then press ENTER. This will allocate the entire drive
as one partition. This is fine for now. Later, you can add a second partition if desired, but let's get the system up and running first...
10. When it's through, Press ESC, and then press ESC to quit the Fdisk tool and return to a command prompt.
11. Now, you are ready to FORMAT the drive...Restart your computer with the Startup disk in the floppy disk drive.
12. Select the Start computer WITHOUT CD-ROM support menu option when the Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed.
13. When the A: command prompt is displayed, type format c: /s, and then press ENTER. (a space between "c:" and "/s". (and between 'format' and 'c https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
14. You will receive the following message:
WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST!
Proceed with Format?
15. Press Y, and then press ENTER to format the drive. Sit back and let it go. Go watch some TV. Will take a while to format.
16. After the format procedure is finished, you receive the following message:
Volume label (11 characters, ENTER for none)?
NOTE: This is an optional feature that you can use to type a name for the drive. You can either type an 11-character name for the drive then press ENTER, or you can leave it blank by pressing ENTER. I usually name it Primary, or Main Drive. But it's OK to leave it blank.
17. Restart the system again with the Startup floppy in. THIS TIME select START COMPUTER WITH CD-ROM SUPPORT.
18. Let the floppy load up. When you come to the command prompt A:, type: D and press ENTER (to bring you to the CD drive).
19. Insert the Windows 98 CD. Type at the (D) prompt: Setup, then press ENTER. Windows will begin to set up. Have the CD Serial Number ready to type in.

Hey! Now THERE'S a novel idea... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
OK I deleted the partition and went and looked and it is gone. Then I rebooted after esc and started over and when I get to that part it says primary dos partition already exists.
I tried it again deleting the partitions and it verified again no partition existed.
Good; it's gone. Now create the partition again as in the instructions above. Step-by-step.
EDIT: or is it gone when you get back to it?
You need to read the prompts carefully when deleting the partition--choose #1, volume label is blank (unless you named it), etc.

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Go back and delete everything. It did not partition correctly. It needs to be deleted, then go back to Create Primary partition and LARGE DISK SUPPORT? answer YES.
When it asks for Volume Label, just hit ENTER. Take it slow and read carefully.
I looked and it says NO partitions defined.
I'll do it again now.
It did this before and then said it already existed when I tried again.

I am choosing the FAT 32.
Then you are not deleting it correctly. Computers are like kids--gotta tell them every little thing. When deleting, read everything slowly and supply the right answer. When asked what partition, answer 1.
"Hopefully" that's the only one showing https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Just curious. What's supposed to happen if I choose NO to the FAT 32? Just what is happening? Or something different?

We may just have to load that onto a FAT16 (yech) and convert it later in Windows---I'm thinking....NAAAAAAAH...forget that....
Beginning to think that boot disk ain't all it's supposed to be. This shouldn't be this hard....
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 02-06-2001).]
So either way it should say something besides UNKNOWN ?
Should I try NO this time and see ?
I have been in there enough now that I have it memorized. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I know I'm doing it correctly. Something has to be wrong.
At least the floppy drive works now. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Try this (can't hurt): Go back into fdisk, delete that partition (slowly)---go back out then return--check to make sure the partition has been deleted --should tell you it doesn't exist. Then power down completely.
Power back up, go into fdisk and step-by-step do the partitioning again. Be SURE to answer YES to "enable large disk support" and YES to Maximum size. You are only going into choice #1 when creating a partition, I hope? Forget choice 2. To check whether the DOS partition has been deleted, choose #4.
I'm preparing a Startup floppy that I KNOW works....

Agreed, greengoose1. I checked the fdisk/format directions triple with some other sites just to be sure--they are correct. Wondering if the disk issn't cracked up. QOH: If it doesn't work this time, this is what i want you to do:
At the A: prompt, type: dir<space>/p
This will bring up all the files that are supposed to be on that disk---check to make sure they are all there. When you reach the end of the list that's showing on the screen--hit ENTER and it will show a few more. Here is everything--are there any missing?Aspi2dos.sys
Aspi4dos.sys
Aspi8dos.sys

Coming into GW BUSH International ? or Hobby?
Let me know your itenerary.
Just posted an inquiry over at Win 98; hopefully there'll be some takers who might know a trick or two. Did you check those files, QOH?
EXTRA (or different):
FINDCD EXE
EXTRACT EXE
MSCDEX EXE
NOT HERE:
Findramd.exe
Msdos.sys
Ramdrive.sys
Setramd.bat
Did you hit ENTER to make sure those other ones were listed also? If so, and they wern't there anywhere in the list then BAD BOOT DISK!!!! Those folks didn't know or didn't care what they were doing. Here's the deal....You can take a fresh floppy and find a trusted friend with a good computer that's running Windows 98 SE (confirm: that's what you're going to put on it, right?). Then make a fresh Startup disk in Add/Remove Programs. OR you can wait a couple of days and I'll send you one that'll work. What'll it be? If the former, do another check on it for all those files before using it.
QOH
When you copy that bootdisk, use diskcopy in dos. Ctrl, bootmenu, 5. command ,enter At C: Prompt p [type in] diskcopy , hit enter.
will look like this C:\>DISKCOPY A: A:
How I copy my Windows 3.1 disk using this 98SE machine. Follow the prompts and it will copy to disk then prompt for blank then copy to the blank when done ask if you want to make more or not. I found it to be very freindly.

Good link, murph. Thanks for jumping in there--yeah, some of this stuff would be good for the "throne room"... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Problem here is that it appears there may be some missing files on the Win 98 boot disk. QoH is enabling the large disk support, but it still keeps coming up as "Unknown System" rather than FAT32--possibly because of the missing(?) files.
Just downloaded one bootdisk and it had only nine files on it. Question - What's the minimum amount of files required for startup?
------------------
Seek Knowledge First and All Else Will Follow
Should have a total of 24 files on it.
yes I hit enter and that was it, then the A prompt appeared. It says on it Microsoft boot disk for Windows 98 series 1.44mb For distribution only with a new pc.
