IE5.0 BSOD - Netscape 6.0 not much better.

I am running Win98SE, AMDK6-2, 192MB Ram.

I can't seem to use IE 5.0 without ir causing the BSOD. This started recently. I did subscribe to McAfee Active Shield, that is the only thing I added recently, but I did that after the problem began. I checked for viruses and having none, sprung for the service. Since then I have tried to no avail but IE locks up within 5 minutes. Either that or it causes a Fatal Exception Error as it is loading. I have tried to "repair" it. It does no good. I also was having problems with Netscape 4.72, so I downloaded 6.0, it's slower than molasses.

Another thing that happens to IE is that sometimes it can never complete loading, it shows a blank in the address bar, the screen remains white.

Copy/Paste functions are screwy, something weird is up. Sometimes when I paste nothing shows up, but if I use BACK and Forward it shows up. This is ONLY IN BROWSERS. Both of them, mostly Netscape since I can't even get IE to function.

There's other symptoms but I am going to post this before it locks up.

Suggestions please, PLEASE??

Another symptom that started around the same time is when using Composer, editing HTML, I get the "you don't have enough memory to do that, close some applications..." That is BUNK. I have plenty of memory and resources. I have minimal things that start up with the machine and all I am trying to do is copy and paste a line of code. I can restart and have the same apps running and it works fine, for awhile.

I set my swap file (min and max) set to 3x the ram I have in an effort to fix THAt to no avail.

What programs are running in the background?

IN THE SYSTRAY:
Rain1.0, Dr. Watson, Human Click, Gator, McAfee Active Shield, Sysmon, Zone Alarm and In control Desktop mgr(my video card's properties). (and since I installed Netscape 6.0 - Java)

IN MSCONFIG:
Printer monitor, scanreg, systray, load power profile, windows critical update, mstask,

Also, occasionally IE will simply "quit all instances" and when it does, one of 2 things happen:

1) Only The speaker, Sysmon and Zone alarm remain... or:
2) Nothing remains, and I mean NOTHING, no task bar, no start button, no desktop icons, NOTHING.

Once or twice I have had Netscape running also when it does #2 and Oddly, when this happens, Netscape will NOT close, and I can continue... !!, And when I minimize it will minimize itself as if nothing is wrong.

But Netscape is having it's own problems too, but I think they are related but IE is just showing more symptoms.

I used to have heat problems, but I recently installed a case fan, changed the heatsinc and installed Rain. Processor is running fairly cool at between 105 and 120. (106 at present, and IE just gave me another Fatal Exception Error about 20 minutes ago.

I neglected to mention that when these things disappear from the systray, they are STILL available to be shut down at Cont/Alt/Delete, but I cannot bring up any program that has disappeared from the systray.

I have 3 gigs of music on a 8.5gig HD, 2.85 gigs remaining. I did recently install a CD burner that has CD Creator 4, but it does not run in the background.

That is alot of programs running in the background. In msconfig, what % of system resources are shown. I would look at quitting some of the programs, especially the gator. I heard some bad stuff about that program.
McAfee has always caused me problems so I went to innoculateit.
Dr. Watson needs only be run when trying to diagnose problems.
Don't know Human Click.
Video info should be accessed when needed instead of through systray.

Your msconfig programs are ok.

what Mhz is your K6-2? System resources are not ram, they are onboard memory that is set at 64k.

Download Docmem at www.simmtester.com and run it to test your ram. Bad ram can cause tons of problems.

450Mhz. I'm getting the RAM tester now. Gator is going to be history after dinner. I'll take the Incontrol Manager and Dr. Watson out of the systray and report in about 3 hours, after dinner. I had Dr. Watson there during the heat problems to monitor the temp, but that is not an issue now.

I use the "resource meter" once in awhile. I used to check it when I got the out of memory bull, and it always said I had like 65% of resources free. I say bull because before my upgrade about 6 weeks ago I could run more with less. I did get more 128RAM then. I'm in Pacific time zone, I'll post during Survivor.

Gator is uninstalled. Dr. Watson is unchecked in MSCONFIG's startup tab, and I have restarted.

Human click is a site feature that allows visitors to initiate chat with the site owner. I have it on about 50 separate webpages. It runs in the systray to alert you to visitors and chat requests. I have used it for about 18 months with no problem...

Next I'm making the boot disk for DocMem, eating dinner than will test the RAM and report ASAP.

Oh, and the in Control Mgr is unchecked in MSCONFIG too...

GET RID OF IT NOW!!!!!!!
And when you uninstall GATOR, it will install OFFER COMPANION without you knowing. REMOVE IT ALSO.
Your FATAL ERRORS and ILLEGAL OPERATIONS will cease after you take these steps.
GATOR is a pile of crap for a lack of better terms.
Besides it remembers your keystrokes, so if anyone was to breach your system, they would have access to credit card numbers, addresses, anything you might have typed in the past on your comp.

Hi , sorry I'm late, my husband desired womanly attention...

As I mentioned above, I had uninstalled (not disabled) Gator and did notice an improvement, but not fixed, so now I uninstalled the "Offer Companion" and have restarted. I will both browsers and report back ASAP. ALthough Netscape 6.0 did load much faster, and no weird typing stuff at the moment. I had uninstalled a few minuted ago and was trying to post but it locked up. But now I have restarted.

For good measure, I will shut down - UNPLUG for 3 minutes and begin fresh.

I hope HTML works here, that's supposed to be bold. I'm going to Hotmail next to see how the composing there goes. I just fired it back up.

Typing in compose boxes is not totally cured yet, even in this small post it has done a couple weird things. What it does is very hard to describe. All of a sudden some of what I typed is gone, and the cursor won't GO anywhere, especially where it is supposed to - at the end of the text line, to continue. The only way to continue is to go to the middle somewhere and put the cursor there and "right arrow" over to the end again, and sometimes even then it stalls right before the end and won't GO. And when I cut and paste, the pasted text refuses to appear.

Anyway, I'm in Netscape 6.0. I'm going to try this in Hotmail and then open IE5 and try that...

Immediately after posting the above, I reloaded to see my post, and the cursor would move on the screen, but would not activate anything on the entire screen. It was a dead mouse. It would not even let me use the start button, nothing. I'm going back to the original plan and going to test the RAM now...

DocMem says my RAM is fine, passed all tests. I ran it twice to be sure. I'm going to try IE now to be able to say if there are improvements there.

What I have noticed a
bout Netscape 6.0 is that it does seem to be loading better, but the text stuff is still all messed up.
Another weird thing is that I can't use right click in the location bar to copy/paste, I have to use Control C/V. It's even hard to get it highlighted...

Sometimes machine language shows up instead. I'll try to catch some and post it.

geez, how discouraging. I opened IE5, and as soon as it was loading I got the BSOD.

I hit the space bar, and another one was there at a different location: 0246:014747FB

I'm going to wait till you guys come back and direct me to a new course of action.

Im guessing you have already run SCANDISK to check for errors, and repaired them all?

You may be onto something there. I checked my schedule, and it seems it has not been scandisking as I had scheduled, for MONTHS. I never got a notice. I tried to do it 4 times (1 thorough, 3 standard) just now and it locks up, mouse moves but scandisk is froze. Attempting to cancel gives the BSOD. I am going to defrag, dump a bunch of MP3 files (they're backed up on CD) and try again. Give me an hour to do all that.

I dumped the music. Scandisk will still not complete. To be sure it is the drive and not scandisk I did the standard test on my D drive, 880MB's, it finished just fine. 0 errors. It still won't finish on C drive.

Should I go ahead and defrag it and try again or have you isolated the problem, and WHAT IS the problem? It's obviously somethibg on C, but is there anything else I can do to find out?

I'm waiting till you tell me so I don't do anything out of order.

Maybe uninstall IE? If that's possible... I think it is since I don't have 4.0 I have WIN98SE with all the updates.

I have an idea (...uh-oh ...there she goes - thinking again...) I can F8 and try to run it from safe mode...

If it wont complete the scan, there might be something writing to the C drive during the scan. So make sure all applications are disabled, including your screen saver and if you have a cable connection, unplug your connection till its finished. The reason for that is because your ISP usually pings you and this will interrupt scandisk.

Try scandisk in safe mode, or dos.

Try IE repair. Often when you add/remove programs (especially ones that use the internet) they screw with IE.

Scandisk finished in Safe Morde, all is fine there..... BUT, I remembered something REALLY important that I was dying to tell you since scandisk was half done.

About 45 days ago, before I had McAfee, I used to go to House Call, it DID FIND A VIRUS. I could not locate anything aboyut it on the net. At the time I choose the option to delete. I didn't think much of it because it said it was in my FAVORITES.

BTW, right now NEtscape will not run, this is IE, go figure.

It might have been in a different order, like JSLogo.URL Adult Friend Finder (free hot pics) ...but that's all that the House Call said. Should I look for a corresponding line in the registry to delete? Or where can I go to clean up the remnants of this?

I suppose I can thank hubby for this mess.

Try Here and run this free AV software. Dump the McAfee.

I'm doing that now. McAfee is dumped, I'm waiting for the customer number to download the InoculateIT. Right now IE is running excellent, Incredibly excellent in fact, VERY FAST, not a single problem for the last 1/2 hour, but this never lasts for longer than a few hours, then it's back to the same thing. Netscape is locking up now, I just don't get this at all.

I'm going to defrag for good measure since the Scandisk was fine. Still don't have a clue.

NS lockups can be due to Netscape itself. 6.0 is still not as stable as IE. I have it, but I stick with IE because it is more stable and still faster.

Cindy: Last fall I was having terrible IE5.5 problems, freezes, blue screens, kernel32 errors, you name it. I learned about spyware here at Virtual Dr., and dowloaded Ad-Aware. Ad-Aware is a small freebie that will detect and remove spyware from your PC. After I removed the spyware from my PC, my IE troubles were gone.

Gator is a known spyware carrier. Although you removed Gator, the spyware is still on your PC. Encourage you to download and run Ad-Aware to get rid of it. You might find it will fix your IE problems altogether (not sure about the effect on Netscape, as I don't use it). If not, no harm done, you sure don't want spyware on your PC, tracking your internet movement and jazzing things up!

After you finish with the adware scan, give some specifics on the FEE's you are receiving. Such as which module etc.

FE Errors in newt post to help keep things here organized.

FE Errors in order of appearance, and these were back to back:

1) A FE OE occurred at 0028:C0091E6F in VXD VETMON95(01) + 00015A67. Current app terminated.

2) A FE OD occurred in VXD VTDAPI(03) + 000002CB. Current app terminated.

3) AND 5)
A FE OD in 0028:C0091E6C in VXD VETMON95(01) + 00015A64. Current app terminated.

4) A FE OD occurred at 0246:014747FB. Current app terminated.

After that I got an illegal operation in (I forgot to write it down, but I know it well, it's the .exe that is related to password files (.pwl) mxpre or something like that. Simply restarting brought the whole same set of FE's so I unplugged for 3 minutes to cycle/reset, it booted ok, then I restarted again.

Now Netscape is running, but the weird text things are happening but not as bad as before. I've only had to use BACK/FORWARD once in all this text of the last 2 posts.. That is good.

Also I didscovered that what I thought was Dr. Watson was not, it was ASUSProbe, a small utility that the Motherboard has to monitor the Processor and Motherboard. (Fan, Temp, and Voltage) My only excuse is it looks like a Dr. I put it back in the systray.

VETMON is the innoculateit software.

Try uninstalling it and reinstalling it.

Did you completely uninstall the McAfee through the add/remove programs?

Hardware monitoring software is often unstable. Use it as needed, but don't have it run continuously in the background.
