Well... Unfortunately, I will suggest getting a new keyboard. it already seems as if your "e" is missing. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ You can get one really cheap, they are like 10 dollars. Or if yours is an ExPEnsive kind, (which i have never bought) or u just don't have the money, then remove all the keys off the keyboard, there is sometimes "foam" inside to catch debris, take this foam and wash it in warm soapy water, rinse and let dry. (Just the foam, not the keyboard). While you wash the foam wash the keys too. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Then gently touch the inside of the keyboard, test if it is sticky or not, if it is, take a DAMP,(not wet, not dripping, DAMP) washcloth and "PAT" the area clean, No wiping, (unless it's really sticky, and then you wipe gently do not press overly hard you can damage the connections to the main board) and if you drip water on the Main board the keyboard is shot, so be careful, (also unplug this from the computer before attempting to clean) Now, you need a can of "air", which you can pick up at a computer store, or other vendor, Dry the inside of the keyboard completely. Attach the foam, and keys (the way you found them) (hee hee hee) then see if it works, (don't forget to wash around the outside too. not wet, damp. I hope it helps, let me know.

Thanks Moon,
Y_s, it's missing and th_ t is wh_r_ th_ _ should b_! This is an _xp_nsiv_ k_yboard also.
Boy, lik_ fill in th_ blanks isn't it?
Thanks
It is at least a little funny to see your problem so clearly illustrated in your m_ssag_.
One of the guys at work did that and we replaced the keyboard for awhile letting the splattered one dry out.
After it did dry out, it worked fine.
Maybe we were just lucky.
Unl_ss you hav_ a wat_r soluble k_yboard
plac_ it in the dishwash_r on the top rack.
DO NOT use d_t_rg_nt. Let dry throughly b_for_ using.
mrfixer, You can't be serious.. please tell me. If you put that in the Dishwasher, you might as well throw it away. It will never dry out enough to use, (at least with in 3 weeks.) My solution was for Immediate fix so he can STILL use his machine with in a reasonable amount of time. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ But it's funny though and will have to try it when I have tim_. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I've had all sorts of electronics left out in the rain. Computers,TVs,printers, turntables, ect.
Unless there's some water soluble component ie. lubricant or paper wraped component there should be no problem.
My packard bell (POS) keyboard needs cleaning I think I"ll wash it now Top rack, heavy wash and dry. See if it doesn't melt.
I'll post back and let you know how it turns out.
OK,
Call m_ gullibl_, but ar_ you s_rious????
Will put it in th_ dishwash_r right now if you ar_!!!
What do i hav_ to los_!!!
I'm going to th_ stor_ to g_t anoth_r on_ anyway.....
Actually, if I was r_ading this from you alls sid_, I would b_ laughing uncontrollably~
It's in the dry cycle as of this moment.
another 1/2 hour I'll let you know.
Hum... my cats looking a little grubby...nah
Why am i just having a probl_m with my _?
Anoth_r thing, i tri_d th_ hair dry_r and don't know if i did it right.
anyon_ tri_d this?
mrfix_r
w_'r_ all waiting to know how it go_s!!!
Hmm, well pure water is non conductive because it has nothing in it besides h20, Tap water is full of minerals and chemicals of all sorts so it will conduct electricity. Cleaning a keyboard with distilled water might work (I wouldn't do it..don't have the nerve hehehe) but I do have doubts about the mineral deposits that putting it through a dishwasher would leave...
(rainwater is much more pure, mineral wise, than tap water)
best of luck...
ciba/mrfixer and whoever else you are today, pull someone else's leg somewhere else.
Hi 'gin.. it's a true post.. had it myself.. not a the "e" but "h" and give _ like you'd have a couple of keystrokes depressed. coffee will erode metal. sugar will create a stick or cover the key contact pad on the kb cboard. I'd say a new kb.. unless you want to take the whole thing apart. mach
I have to agree with Fink, I think the dishwasher would definately ruin the k_yboard. How_v_r, (you know it's hard to do that?) Scholmes needs to calm down and learn to enjoy helping others. You don't have to read these replies. Therefore it's not your concern whether anyone is pulling anyone else's legs. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

To sholmes:
SHEESH!! WHAT A GROUCH!
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
OK I'm done. I had to put the packard bell keyboard outside in the sun for awhile. It won't work while dripping wet. Thats just be cause water is a conductor.
It is still damp but working flawlessly. I can't recomend this cleaning method for all
keyboards as constuction methods differ.
But if the cheapest keyboard on the planet,Packard bell can survive I don't see why others wouldn't.
My favorite keyboard, the IBM 101 can handle
full submersion w/soap and a good rinse.
I don't recomend this method for hard drives, cats or small dogs. Leave this for the pros.
If it ain't broke... I can fix that
mrfixer
I am glad it works mrfixer.. I see that you aren't missing any more keys.. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/, and I tried my cat once.. in the shower.. It wasn't a pretty site let me tell you.. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ so, dishwasher safe eh? I will try that too.. I seem to have gotten chips in between the keys.. hee hee hee

Shlomes no leg pulling here.
It seems I have way to much time on my hands.
This experiment was not scientific. I now must pour an entire cup of coffee w/sugar and cream on this keyboard that I care nothing about. Then confirm that it no longer works.
and try the dishwasher again only this time w/detergent.
All I stand to lose is a good cup of coffee.
Yes I must have to much time on my hands.
This is one thread I can't stay out of
This is hysterical and you guys are serious too... Never laughed so hard....
At least there is still some humor left....
Ciba, I have done the same thing several times, in fact the $50.00 keyboard I am using now had it happen to it, and I'm too cheap to buy another one so...
Take the whole keyboard apart, it's quite easy, just be carefull if there are any cables attached to the parts that are being separated. You will find either a circuit board of some kind and/or padding. Take these materials and use a hair dryer to dry them off - not real high heat as you could toast the circut board.
Let them lay out in the nice fresh air to cool down and relax.
Then put the sucker back together and it should work....BTW while ya have the sucker apart might as well clean the whole thing up - in the dishwasher that is (minus the circuit board)
gday

Sholm_s,
I don't know what your complaint is but this is a tru_ post. I spill_d coff__ on my k_yboard and n__d to us_ it for a r_s_arch pap_r in coll_g_.
I w_nt to buy a n_w on_ and th_ stor_ was sold out.
_v_ryon_ has b__n so h_lpful and I thank you so much for that.
Murphy,
I am going to tak_ this thing apart now.
Thanks for th_ st_p by st_p instructions.
Stor_s ar_ clos_d tomorrow so I hav_ to do som_thing.
Will l_t all of you know how it go_s.
Well I have had friends spill water, coffee, coffee-sweet, and soda onto their lap tops. The water and coffee spills were able to dry out and they saved their system. As to the coffee-sweet and soda, the sugar in them was just too much(made the liquid more conductive to electricity) and they wound up shorting out their keyboard and system.
Try out Murf's suggestion and if that does not work then throw the thing into the dishwater as you have nothing to loose at that point.
Just remember though that even if you dry it out completely you have already started the rust into attacking so you will have some more problems in a year or so.

Thanks again!!!
If you realy need an "e" you can generate one
by holding down the alt key while keing in 101 in the num pad then release alt. For an upper case "E" key in 69.
I think my packard bell keyboard is almost done, Its been in the oven for almost an hour now.
mrfixr you crack m_ up!
Hav_ you got your packard b_ll out of th_ ov_n y_t??!!
Sorry to say that i won't b_ n__ding to g_n_rat_ that "_" though sinc_ i will hav_ a n_w k_yboard soon!
How_v_r did you g_t so wis_ conc_rning comput_rs???
By far the best way to learn about somthing is to break it, then fix it. This holds true for computer related equipment like no other.
Do NOT attempt this at home !!!
For this experiment I take one perfectly good
Packard Bell keyboard and then prepare a perfectly good cup of coffee (three Tbs sugar and cream). I feed the coffee to the keyboard.
Next I prepare the oven, preheat to 200 deg. and place the keyboard into the oven.
This is to facilitate the drying process.
(note the melting point of keyboards is well below 200 degs).
Noticing that the keyboard is begining to melt and brown a little on the edges I remove the keyboard and place it on the top rack in the dishwasher.
I then add Cascade dish detergent and set the washer to Heavy wash/pots and pans.
After the wash is complete I remove the keyboard and return it to the oven for drying
only now the oven is set below the melting point of keyboards (140 deg).
After about a half hour in the oven I return the keyboard to service. To my supprise I get a keyboard error on POST! The computer continues to load Windows. I then launch DOS.
Half the keys function, half don't. Keep in mind this is a Packard Bell keyboard and is prone to errors. None the less I assume there must still be some sugar (or should I say carmel)corrupting the electronics.
Having already put the keyboard through the most rigorious wash I decide it's time for full submersion in a tub of hot water. After two minutes of dunking and shaking it's time for the oven again.
After about a half hour I return the keyboard to service. Still some errors but as the keyboard cools (supprise)things become more normal, but still not quite right. So it's back to the oven for another hour.
The keyboard is now as dry as it's going to get and quite hot. POST still reports keyboard error, the machine reboots again more errors, BIOS serial number is corrupt.
more weird stuff, I shut down.
The keyboard has now reached room temp. and all appears well. No more error msgs. All keys function normaly, except the "o" generates a backslash if I hit it to hard.
I don't know why the "o" is malfuntioning. Somwhere along the line the matrix must have been damaged. I just can't say where. Most likly the high temp (200 degs).
Lets see what did I learn.
1) Keyboards don't like high temps.
2) A faulty keyboard can affect a system (maybe even damage it)
3) Full submersion in hot water is prefered to the dishwasher.
I suspect the keyboard will operate as such well into the future, heck I wouldn't be suprised if the "o" started behaving.
Happy Thanks Giving, and don't eat any funny looking stuffing.
If it ain't broke... I can fix that
mrfixer
If you really need that "e" right away you can download a small virtual keyboard from:

LOL mrfixer...boy, you sure lead a full life! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Mr Fixer..
I'm afraid to ask what you do to clean the heads on your vcr..<g>
I once knew a guy who decided to clean all the knobs and fader caps (hundreds of them) from a well used but very expensive sound mixing console..to facilitate drying he threw them all into a bowl inside a microwave oven on high..most of them ended up looking like they were from a Salvador Dali lansdscape. hehehe...that is indeed how you learn stuff.
Wa-La...
New keyboard is zinging.......
Microsoft Natural Keyboard
Mrfixr- You must have been nominated class clown of your senior class!!! LOL
You are by far the most humorous guy on the net I say!
What do the rest of you think?
Thanks for making me laugh even when I wanted to cry!
This "E" problem has sure had some humor in it!
I looked back at my posts, and couldn't believe how funny they were, but i was so serious and wanted to try to salvage it but to no avail--Coffee is deadly i guess!
PS.
Got any ideas on how to clean my mouse???
It is due for a good cleaning and thought that with your expertise, you may have some suggestions.
You can buy a mouse cleaning kit at your local computer store. But why bother when you have the kitchen sink. I wonder... whats the melting point of mice?
You know mrfixer, with a handle like that I would not expect anything less - do you do Monitors - will they fit into a dishwasher? should you take the case off first?
Wiping the Keyboard under your arm pit does wonders also (but have a shirt on).
To ciba: Whew!! what an experience for you!!
The mouse is easier to clean, get some of that Pepsodent Denture Cleaning and put in a glass of water and let Mousie soak for a minimum of two hours, then microwave dry on DEFROST for 30 minutes - Mousie Workie again.
Great thread, sorry to see it end.

No murf I don't clean monitors. The damm things scare me with the cover off.
It's those deadly high voltages.
Are you sure denture cleaner is nessairy for mouse cleaning?
Just to be safe I think I'll use hot water and a conventinal oven.
Things could certainly have been much worse. Had the coffee been from one of those office dispenser machines, it would have destroyed the keyboard, formatted the hard drive, disabled the Internet and created a black hole into which Earth and its immediate environs would have vanished without a trace.
The planet Clarion, which once shared Earth's orbit, exists no longer because of just this sequence of events. And their keyboards didn't even HAVE an "e".
And six years later:
http://www.suntimes.com/output/tech/...iz10clean.html
I've had many names in the past but mrfixer, my father, only needed one.
Now does anyone have a spare Sigma SD9/10 that needs a rinse?
When I get my SD10 and the next Sigma that will be introduced, I'll seriously try it with my old SD9, lenses removed of course.
