Which ones are you looking at? What features are you looking for, like docx support?
For a whole suite, I'd go with LibreOffice or OpenOffice.

I prefer LibreOffice.
I guess also with docx support.. on occasion I receive docx which I cannot open.
LibreOffice has docx support.
Abiword should also be able to open docx.

You didn't mention the other apps you were looking at, so I can't comment on those.
BTW, there are portable versions of both LibreOffice and Abiword. You can just extract the folders to your desktop instead of a flash drive.

Installed Open Office 3.1..... Using Thunderbird for email client.. Sent a docx message. After I sent it, I went to sent mail. Selected docx to open and it would not...I guess I need to associate it thru Thunderbird. ?
ALSO. Have been using Microsoft Office 2010 Starter which came with laptop in 2012.. Should I uninstall it thinking it is causing a conflict... and how do I set Open Office as default?
Why are you using such an old version of OpenOffice? They are on 4.0.1 already.

Did you download the docx file first, then try opening it? If so, it's probably because you have an old OpenOffice.
I said LibreOffice has docx support, which both Train and I prefer.
You didn't say what OS you are running. The easiest way is probably to just right-click on the file, and choose Open With. Choose the app you want and set it as the default (always open with this program).
Win 7....... Installed Open Office 4.0.1 .... Well I could uninstall Open Office, then install open office.
I uninstalled Open Office, and installed Libre.... I can now open docx in sent email now. Have been running Microsoft Office starter 2010 since 2012 when I got my laptop.. ASUS K53E... some documents within "My Documents" I get a pop up wanting me to register Office or BUY..... cannot afford 140.00 right now.. That's why I was asking about a free office program in the beginning. Can I uninstall 2010? or should I leave it alone for now?

The ads are part of Starter. You can still keep using it for free. Do you have the Asus backup/recovery discs? If so, then you could always reinstall Starter later.Quote:
Office Starter consists of Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and Microsoft Excel Starter 2010 only, reduced functionality versions of Microsoft Word and Excel with advertising. Office Starter is available only as preloaded software on select new PCs with the option of upgrading to the full Office suites at any time.
Office Starter is not trial software — you can continue to use it as long as you need.
Would have kept it other then some documents I could not open unless I compiled with "Purchasing, Have No CD key,...." programs are portioned on HD.... no disks .... I did try uninstalling, BUT I lost "Click 2 Run" had to reinstall thru "Restore"
The Starter version is limited, so maybe there was a feature that only the Retail version has?
You need to CREATE the Asus recovery discs, just in case the hard drive goes bad.

The Starter version is missing a bunch of options.

With me... things have came a long way since 1993. I will report back with my mind soon......... Thanks for the patience...
