i'm trying to re-install vista-32 on my old gateway q6600.
windows installs fine but is missing the following drivers:
ethernet controller
pci simple communication controller
sm bus controller
there is no separate driver or software disc from gateway.
i google for the drivers but get too many hits. not knowing what exactly to look for, i thought i'd post here.

Are you sure that's the correct model number? Q6600 sounds like a quad core Intel CPU, rather than a model number.
ethernet = network card
pci simple com = modem
sm bus = chipset
FWIW. Gateway computers of the quad core series, model numbers start with GT and some numbers. Check your computer again for those letters and numbers.

ya, q6600 is the name but i think it's a marketing thing. upon closer examination, the actual model number is "fx7024".
i searched THAT and found the network controller download. i'm posting from the pc in question as we speak.
but cannot find the pci and sm drivers.
it also has a video card (nvidia geforce 8800 gt) that i don't have a driver for either :(

You couldn't find chipset drivers for the FX7024? I see an Intel driver listed. Like I said, smbus is part of the chipset. I also see the modem driver there.

i had found a dl on the nvidia site but it turned out to be the wrong driver.
as for the chipset, i was looking for "pci" and "sm bus" and couldn't find those.
i dl both but still need to update vista before it will allow the geforce driver to install.
i'll get back when this is done.

Make sure to install SP1 and then SP2. You can't just skip to SP2.
sp1 & 2 installed.
i tried to install nvidia driver but it caused errors on bootup. i rolled it back to generic.
i assume it's because i still have the pci simple communication controller not installed.
do you know where i can find one? i checked the gateway driver dl page but it was not there ... unless it's listed as something else.

You said Vista 32-bit, right? Did you download the 320.49 driver set? If that gave you problems, go to one release back.

thanks midknyte. i guess the word "modem" threw me off when looking for "pci". sorry.
i dl the other geforce driver. it's a different like than the earlier one. i get the same result. on reboot i get the desktop then a change to a aqua colored screen with no icons or taskbar. weird.
Are you sure it's a Geforce 8800GT? What is the make/model of the card? You can try going to the video card vendor's site and see if they have a driver set.Quote:

But you installed Vista 32 not Vista 64 so that link/download is not good.

It should have been 32-bit. You can try going through the menu again.

well, i followed the menu and dl this file: 320.49-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-32bit-english-whql.exe
installed it. same problem.
then i used the " Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products." option. it gave me the same file.
i'm stumped.
That is bizarre. And it's definitely Vista 32-bit?
You can try the old drivers from the Gateway site, but they are 3 years old.

yes, it's 32-bit. bought in spring of 2009. and i agree it is bizarre (especially having nvidia check my card for an appropriate driver). i'll follow your gateway link and try there as a last resort this weekend. if it doesn't work i'm not going to worry about it since this is my home "backup" pc. maybe i'll revisit this at a later time.

you may not remember but i was the one posting in the xp forum a few weeks ago about the "missing or corrupted hal.dll" problem on my work pc's boot-up. it had symantec's go-back installed (http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...rupted-hal-dll). you or train pointed out to me that xp will be unsupported come next spring. this particular pc came with both windows xp AND windows 7 installation discs.
so, i'm going to do a fresh install of 7 on it next week and try the xp mode. there are two legacy qbasic systems that we need to retain.
so you MAY be seeing me in the windows 7 forum then.
