Some of the weird things happening include:

Cannot open IE browser unless I double-click the C drive and navigate to the iexplore file in the Microsoft Internet Explorer folder. If I use All Programs from the Start Menu, the IE Folder shows "empty."

Created a folder called PROGRAMS for my desktop to store a lot of the increasing files used in Broni's ICU...he referred me here. Trouble is, I'm told that a folder with that name already exists on the desktop, but I challenge someone to find it -- no such folder, visible anyway, on this desktop!

Is this enough to get a fix started? There's more.

Navigate to the iexplore file in the Microsoft Internet Explorer folder, right-click it and select "Pin to Start Menu" (or "Pin to Taskbar").

I'd still like to know why I can't create a folder named PROGRAMS on my desktop, especially since I can't see another folder of the same name...that can't be right. Perhaps I should go back to the most recent restore point before the problems started? How do I go about doing that, please?

I'm not sure why, but my quick reply to SpywareDr's advice appears twice?

Click the Start button, type System Restore in the search box, and then click "System Restore" in the list of results.

1. Click the Start button, type in (or copy and paste) the following command into the search box:

cmd /c dir /a /on %userprofile%\Desktop>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

   ---

   and then press [Enter].
   
   
2. When the Notepad window pops up, press [Ctrl]+[A] to highlight everything in the Notepad window, then press [Ctrl]+[C] to copy it all into memory.
   
   
3. Back here in this Thread, start a Reply, click once in the Reply box, the press [Ctrl]+[V] to paste in what you had copied to memory.

From the results of the command SpywareDr gave you, it looks like you DO have a PROGRAMS and a MY PROGRAMS folder on the desktop. My guess is that while they are there, you can't see them anywhere on the Desktop. This can happen if they are positioned off of the visible screen area. If you try the Arrange Icons function, you may be able to correct that. Note where you have your icons now before trying this, as it may move some of them and you might have to move them back.

No....didn't work :(

I deselected Auto Arrange and Align to Grid...PROGRAMS folder not visible. Reselected them...PROGRAMS folder not visible. MY PROGRAMS is what I created this morning so it's still there.

I guess I spend my hard-earned $$$ and call Microsoft.

Before you do that, try this:

In Windows Explorer, click on the C: drive, then Users, then Danny, then Desktop. You should be able to see the PROGRAMS folder then. If you do, then you should be able to open another Windows Explorer window and drag the folder to a different folder such as Documents. Once it is there, you can either try dragging it back to the Desktop, or create a new Programs folder on the Desktop.

Well, almost. But when I click on Danny after navigating to it from Windows Explorer, the message in the right pane is "This folder is empty." So there is no Desktop folder or any other folder for that matter.

FWIW, the Danny folder icon has a padlock symbol next to it.

I also figured I'd try a simple search for PROGRAMS in the Search Programs and Folders pane of the Start Menu, figuring I'd then right-click on it and select Open Containing Folder, but no PROGRAMS folder appeared.

Isn't there some tab somewhere which offers the option to "Show hidden files and folders?" Could that be it?

Note: It is possible that the folder might remain hidden even after adjusting the proper settings. This can be caused by a rootkit adjusting Windows files or settings, amoing other possibilities.

Well, success...and some further stuff...first off, I forgot to mention that nothing appears in my Start Menu save for Computer when I click on Start; however, clicking on it opens up a new window which includes, among many other things, Control Panel. So I clicked on that and followed the path you specified, and bingo! I now have a PROGRAMS folder again, though it and another folder I had originally created appear much lighter in color (?). But they do open. If I have acquired a rootkit, would going back to a past restore point eliminate it?

If you can now see the folders, then you shouldn't have to worry about a rootkit. A rootkit is capable of hiding files and folders from all Windows settings you normally have access to.

I restored my system to 08/23/12 and everything seems fine, including a very visible PROGRAMS folder : )

Right-click any blank space on the Desktop, click "View" and make sure that "Show desktop icons" is selected (has a checkmark beside it).
