Cannot access printer on the network

Have printer set up to main pc with windows 7 home and it works fine. Trying to add printer to my 2nd pc with win xp home and it is telling me I need a driver for it. One thing I have found online is that win 7 has the printer listed as Canon Inkjet i550. Xp had always had it listed for Canon i550. From what i read there is a conflict there.

Also on the printer properties on the in 7 machine there is a spot where I can add additional drivers if needed. It says it is an x86 driver but when I click to install it win 7 says there is no driver avail for that.

All pc's are networked with no other problems other than the printer.

There are drivers for the i550 on the Canon website.

So do I install the driver on the XP machine or the Win 7 one? When I went to install the printer on the win7 with the cd I have for it....the cd rom drive wouldn't even let the cd run. I know I can get a driver for it but not sure what the process is of doing it all.

Personally, I'd put the driver on both machines. Download the driver and when the update driver dialog inquires, point it to the place you put the download.

With some printers, I installed the driver on my new Win7 machine and it asked if it was networked, I said yes and it found it. But I did have to share it on the XP machine.

I have the printer working on the win 7 machine already. So do I dl the driver for it and put it on the xp machine? I am sorry I just want to know what steps do I go thru to get it to work. Like after I dl the driver on XP...then what? I already had a driver installed on the XP computer but that was when it was networked with my other XP machine that had the printer hooked up to it.

Now if that does not work, then do the install and select networking in the installer.
It should find it. But it has to be shared first.

Ok the printer is physically connected to the Win7 PC and driver is installed on there and it works fine. And it is listed as a shared printer. Now I have a 2nd PC which is winXP that I need to connect to the printer and print my work. I dled the driver from Canon's website and installed it on the WinXP computer. I can go to "connect to printer on network" on the XP computer and it finds the printer. But when it goes to load the driver it says it can't find it. So I have to browse for the one I installed on the XP PC. When the driver installed I have no clue where it installed to. I just need to know where to look for the driver. Thanks

Yes I looked at the link but I cannot get it to find where the inf file is for the driver. I read thru so many websites but no one can tell me how to get the driver installed on my XP machine and to find it when I am trying to connect to the printer on the win7 machine.

Finally I found a web page that helped me connect to the printer. not sure if you allow links to other forums but this is what I did:


assume the computers are call XPMACHINE and W7MACHINE.

1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.

2) On the Network Browsing on your Windows 7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share.

Now on the Windows 7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).

3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the Windows 7 machine into thinking it's running the printer.

4) Create NEW port==>Local port

5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

6) Now Windows 7 will load a driver and you'll be able to print on the XP machine.

Simple

(For a "Network stand alone printer") at 4) chose TCPIP port
and at 5) enter the IP address.


If the printer is on the Windows 7 machine and you want to print on the XP machine then do the same instructions on the XP machine --
port name in this case will be \\W7MACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

Well , then install the XP version of the program.

Well going the way of local port it allowed me to browse to the printer driver and install it. it works great now.

Good news indeed.

In addition when sharing a printer that is controlled (not necessarily attached) by a Windows 7 machine one can right click the printer icon and select printer properties (not properties), click the sharing tab then click the additional drivers button.

I've done this for my LaserJet printer that is connected to the LAN. The appropriate drivers (x86, x64, Itanium) are automatically downloaded and installed as necessary.

I had tried that...Win7 wouldn't dl those additional drivers.

You must provide a location for the drivers.
