Hi All,
Trying to help a friend who has a DSL modem wired to her PC. She wants wireless (cheap) and I have a Netgear AP leftover.
Could we add a RJ45 cable splitter to the DSL modem OUT and connect the PC on one end and the AP on the other? Would that work?
If not, what is the easiest (cheapest) option to add wireless in her configuration?

I don't think a cable splitter would work. But a switch ought to do nicely. I bought a nice Netgear FS105 5-port Fast Ethernet switch for around £15 from Amazon before Christmas, they don't cost much.
I assume the modem is acting as a DHCP server?
Yes - the modem is the DHCP - gotta look for a really cheap switch then (she has no dineros).
Since this is for internet use, you could look for a low speed switch. NewEgg had a 5 port one for $10 the other day.

That switch does not appear to have an Auto Uplink feature, so you need to pay attention to what is plugged where. The modem will go to the Uplink port, and any devices go in any of the other 4 ports.

I am going there this afternoon to set everything up and will pay extra attention to the Uplink port.
Well ... I got it all hooked up here but cannot access the AP.
The DSL modem is 192.168.0.1 and shows fine. The switch is connected via Uplink port to the modem and the wireless and PC are in ports 3 and 5 of the switch.
Internet access works (I am using it to type this), but even after resetting the AP I cannot access it via the default address 192.168.0.227.
What am I missing?

I can see the unprotected network under SSID NETGEAR on my phone and connect thru there. But I want to access the settings of the AP to make it secure.
Is it 127 or 227? You listed two different numbers.
You should connect a wired system to the AP to configure it.

The system gets a dynamic ip from the dsl provider. 66...Something
To access the modem i use 192.168.0.1
The pc does NOT connect wireless. But is wired thru the switch.
The ap is supposed to provide access for Wii, ipod etc. It can be seen but i cant get to the settings area. Am i making sense?
No, you are not. If you are getting a 66.x.x.x IP, then you should have gotten a router.Quote:

Most ISPs will only give 1 IP. That's why you would need a router and not a plain switch.
You still didn't give model numbers. If your AP is a router/AP combo, we could work with that.

I was using my phone yesterday to post here - not the easiest of tasks... and please keep in mind that I am not a network expert (but trying to learn).
Let's perhaps start by addressing the modem and switch first:
When the DSL modem is directly connected to the PC OR when it is connected via the switch to the PC, I can type 192.168.0.1 in the browser bar and get access to the modem's setup menu, albeit I can't make changes as all submenus require a login we don't have.
(I still owe the make/model - forgot to write it down).
It is in this menu that I see a non private IP address. I thought that that is the variable IP from the DSL provider which can change after release or reboot. Right/Wrong?
Since I get to the modem from the PC with the 192 number I assumed it has DHCP - could I be wrong here as well?
Side info:
The AP is a Netgear WG602v3 - a plain AP I believe.

That sounds like the router's IP from the ISP, not your WORKSTATION IP.Quote:

Please clarify. Is your WORKSTATION IP in the 66.x.x.x.x range or 192.168.x.x range? Did you run ipconfig? If not, how did you get the workstation IP?
Yup, just a WAP without router. In any case, you should be able to set a static IP on your workstation and connect directly to the WAP to view the config page.Quote:

Finally got around to fixing this - turns out the cheapo DSL modem was not a router (despite the sticker saying so), thus my switch did not work.
And most of the login hints above did not let me access any settings that may be 'hidden'
So I added a Netgear FW/Router/Printserver I had leftover and configured it like my old system. Now all is set and her Wii, XBox etc are all wirelessly connected - with WPA2 encryption of course.
I think I was confused by being able to access the modem with 192.168.0.1 in a browser window. Ipconfig shows a 66.... address, so I should have seen right there that the modem was not a router... ah well... still lots to learn.
