Friends laptop has windows 7 and when it boots it says loading windows files an never goes any farther. He could not find his win 7 disk so used mine to boot with disk and then went to startup repair. Been sitting on attempting to repair disk errors for over an hour. It is a dell inspirion. Any more info I will try to get you if needed. He just dropped off to see If i can resolve the problem.
kspeel-- How long had it not been used? If you had gotten it while still warm, the PC's fan or power supply may not be function too well.
What was he doing just before bringing it to you? What programs, etc. BSOD, freeze, message?
Sorry dont have an answer for any of those. I will say when going to safe mode command prompt it still comes up with screen "loading windows files" and hangs there
I also created a system repair disk and it boots till I have a mouse and the blue desktop screen but after that no options
I think you need to run a diagnostic utility on that hard drive. Download this and burn it to CD, it has all the hard drive diagnostic utilities plus many more besides. You don't need to boot into Windows to run them, just boot up with the CD in the drive, select the utility that you want and it will run:

If you aren't sure of the make of drive that is installed use the Seagate Seatools, or Hitachi Drive Fitness Test utilities, as they will work with any make of drive. You may find these instructions helpful for burning the UBCD .iso file to disc:

got the ultimate boot disk to boot but not quite sure where to go from here. Yesterday I let the laptop sit there when saying loading windows files and after about 2 hours the progress bar filled to the end but then the screen just went blank. ANy way if you can advise what program to run off this disk. Thank you
Ran the drive fitness test and says there is no drive. I looked in bios and shows a 500 gb drive there
Diskcheck 3.0 sees the hd and the ntfs partitions
Does the BIOS Setup identify the drive at all? Even if it is only a string of numbers, we should be able to work out which diagnostic utility you need to run.
pulled the hd to have a look. It is a seagate 500 gb, Momentus 5400.6

During seagate test it gets to loading xms the gets a opcode at "then a long string of numbers"
Step by step when got to himem.exe is when the invalid opcode error pops up
Okay i went into the bios and changed the sata from ahct to ata then the seagate diagnotic worked and identified the hd as

Run Seatools from the UBCD disc. It should not report any errors at all.

Try both, the chances are one won't run and the other will.
ran Seatools for dos and looks like everything failed..Not good huh?

Agreed, if the diagnostics show errors then replace the drive.
