Hi,
this has been bugging me for longer than I care to remember.
what are some of the things that will generate a sound?
for instance; bullet, question mark, exclamation, and other cryptic system events...
The default sound is either ping or chord, so they are hard to distinguish too.
Anyone ever find a listing of what causes the events that will call these sounds?

I am not aware of any listing but you can go into control panel/sounds and it will show you what sounds are associated with each program being different and you can change them to other wavs. I think some of the default sounds maybe the same wav file used by more than one event which is confusing.
Also different themes may change some of the sounds but if the new theme does not change the sound event windows uses the old sound form the last theme. Does this make it more confusing?

Go into control panel/ desktop themes/select pointer and sounds/then select sounds. These are the events in wich you can associate a sound event to. I hope this answer your question
Not to mention they are a true resource hog. I have every thing turned off. They really annoyed me, so I got rid of them.....

at least Office is nice enough to have its sounds listed separate.
But, most of these default systemsounds are meaningless if one does not know what they are FOR?

You'd be amazed how many sound files you have
I got 369 files adding up to 13.3 megs.

If you go to control panel>sounds, take a close look at the list headers for sound events. If there is no lil' speaker next to the event, there is no sound for it.
Most are fairly obvious such as "open program">"close program">"minimize">"maximize">"exit Windoze" etc.
If you want sounds other than what windows gives by default, you can download short wav's from many websites. Just do a search for "Wav" and it should give yu a bunch.
The default directory for sounds is C:\Windows\Media and you can store your sounds there. I prefer to create a "Wav" folder in Plus! for mine. You can then create your own sound scheme by choosing "no sounds" in control panel>sounds drop down menu. Click the sound header in the list you want a sound for, then click "brouse" and go to the folder and choose a sound for that event. Double click it and it will install as the event you highlighted. When you have all the sounds you want for certain events, click "save as" and give it a name like "my noises" https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ . Then click apply>ok and you will have your sound scheme.
Just a hint, choose small, short sounds for most events so the sound doesn't interfere with a program action. Enter and exit windows can be a bit longer, but be conservative.
Or,,to back up a' bit,,if "all" sounds bug you, you can just choose the "no sounds" from the aforementioned menu and click "apply">ok and you should have total silence.(unless,of course,your a heavy breather https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ )..

if I were persistent enough, I'd record sounds like
exclam
question
bullet (I had to translate those event names, I think its bullet)
and so on and then assign these to the system event.
it just bugs me.
and no documentation on them either...
You can have some fun with them; I've got no sounds other than 'Danger Will Robinson' when I boot up and 'Tim The Tool Man' when I shut down..

looks like there is no source available describing the causes o/t events.
so I guess I'll try differing sounds and try figure out what initiates them.
I don't think I'll get much wiser, tho.
Maybe even more annoyed and bugged about them.

Even the MSKBdoesn't have much. I did a little searching myself recently. Tried to find something when I wanted to make my dial up tell me when it was connected (as it drops to the tray...like AOL does). I did find lots of programs to assign sounds to different events not in the Windows list, tho. Even found one to do what I wanted with the dial up.
Here they all are :

"Asterisk"--? (I ast Rick... he didn't know either.)
"Close program" when you click the X at the top.
"Critical Stop" Ya done did sumpthin' baaaad.
"Default Beep" ?
"Default sound" usually happens when I haven't answered a pop up or tried to ignore a warning.
"Exclamation" -- Quit doing that !
"Exit Windows" --Shutting down or rebooting
"Maximize" --clicking the X at the top
"Menu command" ?
"Menu popup" --comes out of nowhere.
"Minimize"--clicking the "-" (Window drops to the tray)
"New Mail notification"-- "Thereisamessageforyou" (Hal tells me)
"Open program" --When you click an icon.
"Program error"-- You probably tried to close it while it was in the middle of doing something.
"Question" --Did you mean to close that without saving. Ya sure ya wanna delete this?
"Restore Down" --when making Window small
"Restore Up" --when making Window big again
"Start Windows --as it's firing up.

I got tried of the event sounds and they slow things down. The only ones I keep using are:
1. "empty recycle bin" is now a sound similar to a toilet emptying.
2. "start windows" is a sexy female voice saying "Yes Master. Tell me want you want me to do."
3. "You have mail" is a sexy female voice saying "Hi big boy! You have mail."

I just have a couple now--big crash of thunder when the dial up window opens, the mail, the question.... not paying enough attention and wouldn't wanna accidently delete or not save something important. And a pretty neat sound when Windows starts.
