[RESOLVED] Power Settings Problem

Windows 7 Ultimate
Pentium 3.4 gig
2 gb memory
DDR2 667 SDRAM
video radeon HD 3600
Display- Acer P244w

I had my power settings so that my monitor would shut down in 15 minutes and the Hard Drives in 30. This worked fine. Then one day it wouldn't work. I tried resetting the times and saving the settings but that didn't work. This may seem strange but I use Magic Jack for my phone and noticed that their display screen changed at about the same time my power settings wouldn't work. Am I dreaming or is there some other problem?

Magic Jack is a VOIP device is it? Is there any software involved with it?

I agree with SuperSparks. There, is most likely some software installed that is keeping your computer 'awake'.

I don't know what VOIP is but when they send you the device, which plugs from your phone line(it must be a land line)and then plugs into a USB port, somehow they do it over the internet as there is no software to install. And the upgrade came over the internet. I should probably contact them to see. It just doen't seem right that they should be able to do that. Maybe I'm to gullible.

"plugs into a USB port" may be the clue here. Try unplugging the Magic Jack USB plug, and see if everything works normally then.

I'm having a hard time finding out what this Magic Jack thingy is, or how it works :( It's a North American only device from what I can discover.

Hummm, unplug the device and see if that works. I've got to remember the KISS principle. As dneilson's link shows it either replaces or ogments your land line phone. $20 dollars a year, after buying the device, for phone service. I' will post back with the results.

I see ads for it on TV nearly every night.. have for a couple of years now. I know a couple of people who use it and like it.

pipercub.. VOIP- Voice Over Internet Protocol. ie- MagicJack.

One reason I don't use it because it requires the computer to be on whenever you want to use the phone (or receive calls) and I'd rather not do that for a number of reasons.

This is what I use for my VOIP phone, a little box that plugs into the router, and into which you can plug any standard landline telephone. It requires no software, the configuration is accessed through a web browser, and you can use it with many VOIP providers. I use Sipgate, there are no fees at all, you just pay for credit in advance to make calls. There is no need for a computer at all, though the router and adapter box have to be left on all the time.

The magicjack central server(s) substitutes for the "little box" hence the annual fee. That's why the PC needs to be on all the time. The USB device needs to be configured via the browser although I'm not sure if it automatically installs any software directly to the hard drive.. I would hope not (without the users permission).

I unplugged the device and my power settings worked. I plugged the device back in and the power settings don't work. Sort of scary!

I just checked with tech support for Magic Jack and they said they did the latest upgrade to disable the power saver but that they are working on a fix. I probably should have asked them if that was legal.

OK, plug the Magic Jack back in, then go to Device Manager and find it in there. Right-click, choose Properties and look in the Power Management tab. See if there is a setting there that will prevent it from suppressing power save options.

Under "disk drives" there is "Tigerjet harddisk USB device"
Under "DVD/CD-ROM drives" there is "Tigerjet CD-ROM USB device"
Under "Sound, video and game controllers" there is "USB internet phone by tigerjet"
When I right click on "properties" there is no power management tab on any of them.

That's a pity :(

In that case, I think all you can do is to remove the USB plug before going into power save, and then plugging it back in again afterwards. It is a far from satisfactory arrangement, though. That's one of the main reasons I never liked USB VOIP phones such as Skype, etc.
