Chronically slow/unresponsive/"hung up" computer
I have had ongoing problems with my Dell XPS 400 I purchased in Oct. 2005. I am using Explorer 7 with Windows XP. My yahoo homepage never opens with current headlines - I have to hit the refresh button upon loading; I seldom get a webpage to close normally (use ctrl alt delete or get frustrated to hit the red X and "end program" because the machine is unresponsive). All of my Norton scans (of course) come out clean. Pages load EXTREMELY slow, photos in gmail sometimes don't show up at all or some will/some won't. My computer seems to make "working" type noises at random times even when it's not being used (by me anyway). Please, Please, Please help! I am about to order a laptop and try and melt this thing in the firepit.... Below are the responses to the posted instructions....I could not for the life of me (or this machine) get the GMER scan to run - it kept stopping and hanging up the computer.
Computer doing better....one last issue!
Followed all your last steps....my only problem was in trying to do the defrag (which apparently I never have done....) I got an error which prohibited me from doing it - the error said I needed to do the chkdsk utility on /f ? Needless to say.....I have no idea what this means? I did the disk cleanup, but now I'm at a loss. If you doubted my level of idiocy before (haha) now you're certain?!?!
Everything else seems to be fine though.....and I'm very appreciative!!!! :)
