I'm about to have cataract surgery which scares the heck out of me. The doctor makes it sound about as dangerous as getting a haircut but messing with the eyes is almost a phobia with me.
My question for someone who has had the procedure is was there a recovery period when your vision was impaired? If I can't read VDr I'll suffer withdrawal symptoms.
I can't help with the recovery question, but there's plenty of decent screenreader software available if you need it, both free and $ware:

Co-worker in the next room agrees with the haircut analogy.
Not only is there no down time with bad vision - she said she was a TON better the same day.
My mom had cataracts done a few years before she passed away. No problems and they totally corrected her myopic vision at the same time. She no longer had to wear contacts or glasses... she was extremely happy. As I recall recovery time was negligible.

Had a cataract removed and a lense implant several years ago. Just wore a patch on the eye for a day and that was it. That eye had always been the most nearsighted one, but after the surgery,I had to get my glasses changed. It went from 20/200 to 20/30. No problem with that! :)

Had it done a month ago . takes them about 5 minutes . nothing to it .
they have two lenses they can put in one you will still need glasses , and for a extra $1,200.00
you can have the one that you don't need glasses . depends on your insurance .
Ouch. I knew about the different lenses but not the cost. I may have to cut down on my visits to Micro Center but its worth it to avoid glasses. Thanks.Quote:

My wife had catarac surgery & implants. Before she had to wear glasses, now just when reading.
Be careful-if you are told not to take aspirin (or aspirin products). My wife was going to have the procedure done & was told to stop the aspirin/products for a week before. The day of the surgery, she had a stroke. My Opinion only - - was caused by stopping the aspirin/products.
Sorry, to continue: The actual surgery & implant was done (after her stroke) at a laser clinic, which didn't require her to stop the aspirin/products.

I think they want you to stop because it thins the blood .
jerryctx--I had cataract surgery about 12 years ago--both eyes about six months apart--very satisfactory and I was ready to roll the next day. I had one eye fixed for near vision and the other for distance. This allowed me to function without glasses when it was not convenient to wear them, but I did have glasses made to reverse the corrections so both eyes functioned at all distances. (I like wearing glasses--I feel my eyes are protected.) Nowadays you can get bifocal implants, but I am not sure all the bugs are out.
The surgery was delayed for several reasons but finally done yesterday. All is well. My vision is not perfect but it improves over time (I couldn't read yesterday). It was painless and hardly even inconvenient.
One question remains. I forgot to ask the doctor what was the machine in the operating room that sounded like a cross between R2D2 and someone strangling a cat.

Did you try the optional lenses (CLE/RLE) like Ridgerunr?
No optional lenses. Dr didn't think it was worth it. He thinks I wont need glasses, except possibly for reading. At the moment, I'm using 3X magnifying glasses I picked up at Walgreen's for $1.75.
There is already a hugh improvement in vision, in contrast as well as sharpness. The world looks almost gaudy I'm so accustomed to flat contrast. And I can find the cursor now without waving the mouse around. Yea!
