Nice. Installing right now :)
Thanks for the info and the link. I've been using Avast for some time and am very pleased with it.
I like the new interface :)
I urge extreme caution. IMO, 5 is NOT ready for general release.
I tried updating Avast Pro from 4.8 to 5 @ work. It did NOT go well. The license key would NOT work on 5 and there is currently NO way to convert short of individual support. What makes this frustrating, Avast says it works. It impossible that the 4.8 key won't work with 5.
Second, at the end of the install, the PC froze HARD. Had to use the power button to get running again. This on a healthy PC that was running 4.8 Pro with zero issues.
I will be waiting until there is a new build before trying again... :(
As a follow up, I tried the free version of Avast 5 and it will not install either. This on a PC that runs free or Pro 4.8 perfectly. Something is clearly wrong with this first version... :(
That's a "regular" computer mystery - how every computer is different.
I had no problem whatsoever with installing free 5.0 over 4.8 (it uninstalls 4.8 automatically). I also saw couple of threads on other boards and no problems reported.
What do we know about damn machines?....LOL
A new version 5 beta was released today (build 394) and it runs on everything I use Avast on!! So, I expect an updated release version will soon be in the pipeline... :)
Update...
My Avast Pro 5 installation had a freeze up on the first boot this morning. I rebooted and all is fine now. Not sure what happened?? Something to do with the definition update?
Beta Build 396 is out. I will test it tomorrow. If it tests well with the gang hanging out at the Avast forum, it will likely be the next full maintenance release for Avast 5...
Indeed, Avast 5.0.396 is now the current official release. If you have the original 5.0.377 release, I urge you to update.
Just to add one more report, I downloaded Avast 5 also with no problem and it seems to be doing a bit better than the old one which had gotten pretty poor.
Broni, I suspect most of us have had that freaky experience where something comes up "out of the blue" which never showed up before and which we'd really like to have; but can never get to come up again! That's where computers are different from anything else I ever worked on.
Final follow-up... I had been version updating my Avast 5 Pro installation from previous version 5 builds. Something along the way had corrupted the definition update process. Once I did a complete uninstall, reboot and new installation, all is well, including definition updates.
D/L 5 last night(1/31), now afraid to update my 4.8. Is it 5.0396?
Avast site is a nightmare, and tech help is nil. I just had to reinstall 4.8. My original license key has disappeared, where I had pasted onto the yellow-highlighted line, but don't have a copy of it. On my other comp, where I have my original installation, it says, 3277 days left, but expires in March. And the license key doesn't show there either.
So filled out the form at the site to re-send my license key, but nothing came. :( :( :(
Might go back to AVG-Free.
Hmmm... Definitely not cool!
As of Saturday afternoon, Download.com was still serving up build 377 (the original release.) 377 did NOT work for some users, including me. If that was what you ran into, it explains your troubles. As of Saturday, the only place for 396 was @ Majorgeeks http://majorgeeks.com/Avast_Home_Edition_d1968.html
License-wise, they are definitely running slower than before the new release. If it fails to come, try again. I had to renew my free home license and a paid work Avast Pro license and they both took longer than they used to.
Hopefully you can get things going ok again. :) The new version is awesome!
I haven't installed my download yet. Had to reinstall my 4.8 for another reason. My serial came today.
If I update directly from the program, will I get the latest?
Possibly a generational thing here. By "awesome," you mean easier to navigate, fewer false positives (too early for that,) or attractive, which is superficial. And do I have to redo all my settings, or will they be imported?
I don't know if 4.8 will update to 5 or not when invoked from within 4.8. I went over the top with a pre-downloaded installer. By awesome, I mean pretty much everything. The GUI is greatly improved, probably the best I've ever used, much easier to follow what's going on. It has a notably smaller memory footprint than before which IMO, is a very big deal. And yes, it is attractive. Maybe superficial but Avast has been justly criticised for it's looks in the past. Now that has been addressed.
As for the false positive issue, IMO, Avast is about average in that regard. I have had a handful of minor ones over the last year. They did have a very serious FP issue in December but it was human error that caused it and IMO, they have learned their lesson on it.
You mentioned AVG as an alternative to Avast. IMO, AVG is not a serious contender for antivirus. It incredibly bloated and if you look around the web, it is what many users are running when they need HiJack This infection cleanup help. I NEVER recommend AVG for anyone for any reason. If you want a free alternative for Avast, it's AntiVir...
I tried to upgrade from within 4.8.. it does not jump to 5.0.. only the latest 4.8 version.
Same here, until ver. 8.0 came out.Quote:
I had used AVG-Free for years
I've downloade Avast free version 5.0.396.
Before using it, Avast asked me to registered.
I did.
Is that it?
I did not receive any registration key at all.
I am the first time Avast user. I uninstalled my AVG 9
http://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus.php
That's why. You can register your Avast at the above link.Quote:
avast! Free Antivirus works for 30 days after installation in trial mode
When you uninstalled AVG, make sure to run AVG Remover: http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools
You surely have some leftovers.
Did you use the AVG Remover to clean up?
http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools
Broni andTain:
No I did not.
But, I used the Revo Uninstaller, instead.
Did I do something wrong?
Ngan
Is it too late to use the Link you gave me?
My question: would I receive some kind of serial numbers or registration key after registering.
Avast says:registration will expire 02/01/2011.
Ngan
damn!
I might've deleted the Avast email wirh its registration key in my spam email box.
I will follow Broni's link to register again.
Is it the right thing to do?
Ngan
i
Just got my registration key.
Now: how to insert it in thr program?
Thank you
Ngan
Open the main program from your Program menu, stop the memory scan, click on Registration and paste it in.
Thanks! Foxy.
:D
See my next thread for the climax of this tale.
Foxy: I will see you there!:)
I've also posted at the Avast forum, but they won't admit it's buggy. Companies that don't want to back up their product always blame you or your other software.
darn it! how come so many people's having a hard time with the latest version of the so praised Avast.
It makes me wonder if I should go back to AVG, knowing it is bloated. According to the reviews: over 80 millions use AVG, and over 100 millions use Avast. Not much difference. Both are equally good. It all comes down to personal preference.
Honestly the installing of my Avast 5 went so smoothly, except for a minor problem of registering and pasting the serial numbers:D
That's great, ngaanvu, and not everyone's having problems. But if enough folks do, they should fix it. As long as it's compat with your Win version, something that important shouldn't run smoothly only on some ideal computer with certain specs. If it's incompat with other software, such as a certain firewall, they should specify before installation. I formatted my C drive last month, and the registry's squeaky clean. It should have gone smoothly.
You can always go back to AVG if Avast slips up on the next one.
Foxy: I will give Avast a free ride on my PC for a while, and see.
I've noticed Avast " scan PUP" feature is turned off by default. Should I turn it on?
Good luck on your Avast use:)
Potentially Unwanted Programs may not technically be malware but they may collect things like web activity data and so forth. Examples might include things like a coupon shopping toolbar and the like. Some users love this stuff while others (like me) want to guard their privacy much better. It's unchecked because these things are in a "gray" area and each user is left to decide whether they want this stuff blocked or not...Quote:

I'm back to trying 5.0.396 again on the troublesome PC. I read over @ the Avast Forum that actively running the paid version of MalwareBytes is causing issues. So, I felt I should turn it off and see if that is the cause of my PC freezes. So far, so good. The real test will be tomorrow morning when I initially boot and Avast tries to update to the latest definitions...
HAN--I don't have the resident version of Malwarebytes. I refuse to troubleshoot an A-V program that should run smoothly on a clean computer, just formatted. That's Avast's job, not mine. If it runs for you, that's fine. If it won't play nicely with Firewall X or Antispyware program Y, they're not doing their job. I've switched back to Avira, with Broni's help about doing away with the pop-up screens.
