No Connections

On our desktop we cannot get on the internet wit IE or Mozilla. We have done a system restore, unplugged the modem, re-booted etc., and there is still no internet connection. 2 days ago the monitor went off so we just shut the cpu down. Tonight whne we turned it on, the monitor came back on and the cpu booted, however we cannot get the internet. We have unplugged and re-plugged all cords and we know the modem is working because my laptop is working off the same modem. We also let windows try to find any connectivity issues but there was an error and it could not complete. We also tried to refresh the IP with no luck.

Any ideas on why there is no internet connection? Thanks.

Use the following command (from a Command Prompt) to create a file with your IP address info:

Thanks jdc. We did all that last night. I was on the phone with FIOS (Verizon) our internet provider for almost 2 hours and they had me do that as well as renew, plus all the things we had already done. The modem and cables all work ok because we hooked them up to my laptop and all was fine. I even tried to assign the IP address instead of auto find and it would not log on. I tried to set up new connection and it said connected but it would not log on. It will not connect to IE or Mozilla and the AV gives an error due to the fact it cannot connect to the internet.

Any other things we can try?

I just typed this into the command prompt

ipconfig /all > C:\ipcfg.txt

I got Access Denied. We are logged on as administrator.

Try just the "ipconfig /all"
Note the space after ipconfig. See if you get results displayed. If you do, try full the command again but leave out the C:\ The file will be placed in the directory shown at the command prompt window.

The full command without the C:\ still did not give anything.

Earlier I tried the F8 -Last known good configuration and I got on the net, but that was short lived. When I tried to open the AV to update and scan I lost the connection. Tried the F8 again and got a blue screen that said XP stopped due to errors 0X0000007B (0XF7CAE524) 0XC0000034, 0X00000000.

I checked the network devices and they are working properly. I have done a system restore but still does not work. As I said in an earlier post our provider worked with me trouble shooting last night and the cables, modems etc are working.

For some reason it is not picking up the DNS server.

Thanks Train. Just tried that and it still does not connect to the net. The LAN says it is connected, firewalled. I use the WIN firewall.

A couple of questions;
If you type "ping 65.32.1.70" at the cmd prompt, what response do you get? (e.g. reply, request timed out, or destination host unreachable)
If you type "ping 192.168.1.1" at the command prompt, what response do you get?
What type of DSL modem/router is this? (e.g. motorola, netopia, etc.)
If you can type "ping 192.168.1.1" and get replies, try opening your browser and typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. Does it open?

If it does not open, go to Start>Control Panel>Internet Properties. From there click on the connection tab. In the lower left-hand corner you should see Lan Settings, click it. Look in the lower section (Proxy server) remove any checks if there are any there. Try your browser again.

If it does open the problem lies in your modem/router configuration. Would need to know the model and version to assist further.

Cereally; I assume you have a copy (Norton Ghost or equivalent) of the OS. Have you thought of making a clean installation? It sounds as if there is a problem in the OS.

LOL @ Cincy Jim. I needed the Bud light about 2 hours ago. We have so many files on this cpu, but yes we have thought about the clean install, even tho we want that to be the very last resort.

Do a clean install to a new hdd, then slave that one in, and copy paste what you would hate tp lose to the new one as a example but back it up some how before you lose it all.

We actually had another HDD but it was not plugged in, so we plugged it in and got it booted up and so far is working fine.It was set up with winxp, just no other programs, bookmarks etc. The only way we can see the old HDD is to unplug the new one. We don't know how to make it recognize both.

Is there an easy way to copy the info from the old one to the new one? Will it copy any virus that may be on the old one? The old HDD is SATA and the new HDD is IDE if that makes a difference. We still have to update this HDD with all the winxp updates etc because it has been sitting idle for awhile.
