I have a Lenovo G550 with windows 7 home. Is there any way I can disable and enable its Alps touchpad at will ? I used to do that with my old HP laptop. Please refer to the image enclosed.

My old HP had an option for disabling touchpad. Since it was also alps touchpad, I thought somebody might have a clue how to go about it?
The alps driver is : 7.2.1602 it it matters.

Thats what I have been doing since I bought it two weeks back. Am tired of doing that a couple of times daily. Even talked to Lenovo support on this and they dont know anything. Every time you boot the machine or restore from hibernation, you need to press that again.
I can live with this key combination but wondering why cant I do it thru the alps / mouse management panel shown above. That option was there in HP while it was also alps touchpad.
Can't you uninstall it or disable it via Device Manager?
Uninstalling does not work as win 7 uses its native drivers. There's no option for disable when I right click on it in the device manager.
Are you certain it isn't in Device Manager? It doesn't matter what drivers it uses - its still a device.
What options do you see in device manager if you chose properties? It should give you an option to disable that device in there.
It is in the device manager but without any option to disable it - strange, right ?

I have been struggling to find a solution since I got this laptop. For this very reason, it seems I am going to sell this laptop when I have money to buy a HP 17 inch. Most of the HP machines have on / off button. I mean whatever laptop I buy, I will check first for that button. My earlier HP notebook did not have that button but it was v easy to disable and enable it through the alps/mouse settings. Both these settings led to the same window to enable and disable it.
My Toshiba , 16 inch, has the switch feature. Love it.
And even it is enabled my hand passing close by or bumping the laptop does not make things jump all over the p[lace.
Hi train, now you understand my dilemma. Lenovo support told me that only G530 has this feature. And this G550 came just last month. Is this how you make a great product. Are you listening IBM/lenovo - am not going to buy any of your lappys again :(
BTW, are you interested in exchanging my new laptop with your old one :)
My old 14 inch Toshia, after I did a clean install, never had the touchpad drivers installed. :D

Windows 7: Control Panel > Mouse > "Advanced" tab > "Advanced feature settings" button > "Others" tab. In the "USB Mouse Connection" box, select "Touch Pad is automatically invalidated".

Oops, sorry. Looks like that option is not available on your model/version. :(
Sorry for writing back on this old thread. I have found what I was looking for.
In fact, I think it would work for any laptop as i tried it on two different ones and both worked fine.
The ALPS touchpad driver provided by Toshiba adds a special functionality to the touchpad. Once you plug in the usb of the mouse, the touchpad gets disabled. And when you plug it out, touchpad enables. Its like using a magic wand - never heard about it anywhere.
I have that driver with me and can provide it if its alright to do it here. Else, search on the toshiba site and it works real well.
Not to mention, next laptop I buy will be Toshiba. They understand what customers want. These small quirks really go a long way to make ones life easier. After all, we are complex organisms made of habits :)
:)I downloaded the HP Alps touchpad driver sp40715.exe encoding
product version 7.2.1721.112/7.102.172 Rev.A (ALPS Touchpad Driver)
and this driver installed fine on my G550 Lenovo. It runs in the system
tray and can disable the touchpad under the 'Other' tab.
This driver does not seamlessly disable the touchpad when a USB mouse
is plugged in, but does the trick in a few simple clicks.

I will try your software also. But, nothing beats this toshiba software I have. Still, the software you mentioned could be handy. It's about time all laptop manufacturers start providing an on / off button. if you google, you will see so many folks looking for a solution for that.
