Generally, if it works in Vista, it'll work in Win7.

The general jest - if it works in Vista - it'll work in Win 7.
There are several sites for Vista and probably some for 7 where someone has compled a list..
Sorry, I'm guilty of the "not giving enough information thing". How about XP?
What are you asking for? Do you mean Office XP or Windows XP?
pipercub I'm running programs that was created for Windows98 in Windows 7.
If you know that you may need to run XP apps that wouldn't run under Vista, buy Win7 Pro or Ultimate. You then get the free, and excellent, XP Mode, which actually runs XP as a very highly integrated virtual machine.
Again I'm sorry.
Windows XP.
I guess what I have to figure out is can I run seven from a clean install with my computer and which version of seven do I get or do I go with the versions that support Windows XP. Photolady, did you use a clean install of seven or one that supports Windows XP? I tried to run Microsoft's program to see if my computer would work with seven but the program wouldn't run.
You can always get VMWare or Virtualbox if you want to run XP. You don't have to use the Win7 XP mode.
It would help if you told us your system specs instead of us guessing.
XP PRO service pack 3 v.5755
Pentium 4 3.4GHz
2 GB RAM
Intel D945GTP MB
Radeon HD 3650Video Card
Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-106
TSST CDDVDW SH-522A
Western Digital 500GB SATA HD
Can I just format the HD and install Seven?
Would it be better to install a version of Seven that supports XP?
I really appreciate all the responses!
I don't think there will be much problem with running Win7 on that rig. Unfortunately, you cannot run the XP Mode as it requires hardware virtualisation support, which your Pentium doesn't have. So you would have to use 3rd party virtualisation software. However, any version of Win7 should be OK to run those. VMware is best, but it is $ware, the others are free.
Virtual PC 2007
Virtual Box
VM Ware
Thank you for the info! :)

VMWare Server is their free version, but VMWare Workstation has way more features.
I also had big problems when I tried to install VMware Server in Vista x64 a while back. It may be fixed now though.
I have not found any yet that does not work.
Thanks for the reply!
There's hope for this senior citizen yet.
