Strange pop-up at start up

Recently at starting up my Acer Travelmate I get a strange pop-up' on the opening screen

The message says ' Catylist Control centre is not supported by your enabled graphics adapter ...Please update your ATI graphics adapter or enable your ATI adapter using Display Manager '

I go to Device Manager, look for the state of devices and see the following:-

General Tab

' Radeon Express 1259 Location PCI Bus1, Device 5' Function 0.

This device is working properly '

On pressing Driver Update Tab....and requesting Web Search for update I get:-

' Windows has determined software for your device is up to date '

How do I get rid of the pop up ?

All help will be acknowledged

Are you using the windows driver or the manufacturer's aka Acers?

The message names Radeon and I believe that it is an Acer driver thoughI am not sure.
Is there somewhere other than Radeon in device Manager that I should look ?

Also, can you tell mewhat is Catalyst Control, mentioned in the pop-up and what does it do?

The catalyst control center comes from Radeon but that doesn't mean you're using Acer's driver.

To check that you are using a non windows driver. Check in Display setting via "right click desktop", chose properties>display settings. Click on the Advanced settings button>click button that says "Properties" then the Driver tab. It "driver provider" will show if it's Acer or Windows or Radeon.

I have downloaded the page from the link and will study the details, as well as following your instructions regarding finding the source of the driver. I have to do the latter on the Acer machine and will try it later today.

I am guessing at present that it is an OK driver as windows found it and accepted it as current on my machine. Could downloading the Windows driver be causing the pop-up situation however ?

Are downloads from ati.amd.com freely available or do I have to register for a trial ?

I will post back with what I find out.

The drivers from Windows update, normally break things and cause all kinds of hair pulling errors to happen.

I followed the path you suggested. I believe the driver is a Radeon (Acer ) driver.

I clicked on update and got the same message after web search, 'Device is working ok etc.

On a fresh start up I got the same pop up. This is a nuisance although everything seems to be working correctly.

Is there anything more I can do?

I have followed a range of suggestions and still the aforementioned pop-up keeps coming back.

There must be someone out there who has suffered the same problem and could help...would be pleased to hear from you.

It is annoying, and a pain to carry on clicking it to carry on work,
but fortunately everything else on the machine is working fine.

There have been many views but as yet no solution to my problem, I am surprised that there isn't anyone who can help considering the wealth of knowhow out there.

What I really would appreciate.. if possible, step by step instructions

I really don't have much else to tell you except try reinstalling the driver. Get the one from Acer that they show, unstall the one on your computer first, and install the one you downloaded. It could be that the catalyst isn't right for your system. Just use a basic driver.
Btw, anytime you click on that update, it just looks for an update within Vista, not online at Acer.

Trouble is, I have tried searching the web option and get the same response, to the effect that ' This device is working O K '

I have been to the ' Radeon ' drivers site and cannot see my particular version of the Catalyst graphics controller mentioned.

I will wait on and see whether anyone else can offer a solution

What is the exact model of your Acer? It would help for us to know the specifics rather than just saying "travelmate". Don't handcuff the people trying to help you.

At a loss for knowing what to do I took the option ' Rollback to a previous driver ' in device drivers, and so far the dreaded popup has not reappeared on several startups

If you mean that, but i don't see anything else helpful.

i can guess that means an x1200. like i said, specifics help. Did you try the integrated/motherboard drivers from the ati website for the x1200?

And I didn't mean for you to search the whole web, but look at ACER.

I have noted what you say.

As I mailed earlier, I rolled back the driver and all my applications seem to be working fine.

I am grateful to all the folk who have posted.

In light of all the views that this thread has had, I am sure that some folk must have benefitted from the assistance that you and other posters have contributed.

Th rollback was a permanent solution for me.
