I am using WINDOWS XP SP3.
One question, when I open Windows Explorer and click to expand the "C" DRIVE it hangs up and I cannot do anything except watch the hour glass. I let it sit for awhile but eventually I have to just shut down my machine. Is there a fix for this?
Coach17--Create a shortcut to C:\ using the info in the image below. That will open Windows Explorer with C:\ already expanded. Does it still hang?

C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe\n\e,c: It says it cannot be found. According to the image you referenced I believe I typed it correctly.

Try this:
Pay attention to the slashes versus backslashes, and note the space after the .exeCode:C:\Windows\Explorer.exe /n,/e,C:\
I was able to create the shortcut and now when I click on that shortcut windows explorer does open up and now my systems hang up immediately and all I can do is power off and reboot.
I am at a loss as to why this is heppening. I appreciate all help I can get.
Get your WinXP CD handy, then go to Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes (you don't get any report from the System File Checker, it just silently replaces and corrupt or missing system files that it finds).
I tried the Windows CD and it says it is the wrong CD. It is the original CD. Since the original install years ago my hard drive has been reformated. My friend who built the computer used one of his OEM disks to re-install but used my original serial number. I assume this is the problem. Is there any other way to fix this?
It may not be that, it could be that your original CD didn't have any Service Packs. What you need to do is slipstream SP3 onto the disc and then try SFC again. Here's how:

Before I do anything I just wanted to let you know my windows cd does say SP1A.
The should you have SP 2 or SP3 installed, it will not work until you slipstream SP3 to it.
Just to make sure we are straight, I have SP 3 installed. After clicking on the first link and did a run for C:\XP-SP2\WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe -x
it says it is not found. From what I am reading I have to go into windows explorer for some things and that is where the problem is. Once I open it up and click on anything on the left side my syatem hangs up,
Coach17--Going back to that shortcut image I suggested, the Target line should read C:\Windows\Explorer.exe /n,/e,C:\ Note there is a space after .exe and a comma after the "n". And did you fill in the "Start-in" Line?
I copied and pasted the C:\Windows\Explorer.exe /n,/e,C:\ so it would be correct. I am not sure what you mean by the "Start-in" line? I right clicked on my desk top and went to new and shortcut and where it says browse I pasted the shortcut. When I clicked the shotcut windows explorer did open up but my whole machine froze up again.
Please let me know.
Just a question.. you stated this happens when opening the C: drive.
What happens if you rightclick on the C: drive?
Do you have a D: or E: drive?
If so, by opening another drive will explorer hang as well?
Another question... does it happen when you log in as another user?
Yet another question (this should be my first question), in eventviewer are there any errors from source Disk?
(To open eventviewer - goto Start > Run and type: eventvwr)
I do have a D and E drive. Now when I click on anything in Explorer it hangs up. I only have one user.
I went to event viewer and did not see anything that referenced source disk but when I highlighted "System" and opened that I see quite a few errors. I have attached that log file so you can see it.
Please advise.
I don't think the attachment was there. I cannot figure out how I can let you see these errors. Can you advise.
I cannot attach that type of file so I need to know how you can see that.
In eventviewer check if the same error comes up frequently.
If so, doubleclick that error and click on the button with 'two pages' this will copy the error.

My shortcut is set up properly and when I open it up to windows explorer my system locks up. Where do we go from here?
Something is badly corrupted. I still think using the System File Checker is the best option, but you could try System Restore to roll back to a point before the problem started. It's a bit hit and miss with this kind of problem, but you might get lucky.
I have had this issue for quite some time so System Restore is not going to work. Any other suggestions?
I was 'hoping' for more specific errors.
Are you using XP Home or Pro?

and set Startup type to disabled.
Might help....
Another thought; it could be a corrupt item in contextmenu.
Download ShellExView and temporarily disable all non-microsoft extensions.
Other then that I think you should go for a sfc /scannow
Ok, I have Windows XP Home. I did your first scenario Start > Run > type in: services.msc > doubleclick Application Management
and set Startup type to disabled. After I disabled this I re-booted and when I went into Windows Explorer everything worked fine. The issue of freezing up the system was when I clicked on the "C" drive plus sign. Everything appears to be fine now.
Can you just explain why disabling startup type did the trick?

Glad to hear it's fixed.
Application Management is a service wich doesn't belong to XP Home.
Calling a non existant service probably got the explorer upset.
