Emachine T2984
Have a question regarding the above topic..... Someone I know has this pc and the ps is definitely gone.. MB unsure yet. There is an online storethat sells the mb, ps, and case for 170.00...... In the event the mb is gone also ( which I have read power supplies have done so ) is it possible to order this replacement and install his original HD? Sounds dumb, but I just thought I would inquire..

If the mobo is the same make and model number the hard drive should work just fine.
-
I would question whether $170 is worth it for a PC of that age and spec though. If you can borrow a PSU from somewhere I would try that first to see whether it has taken anything out with it, if it only needs a new power supply then it would be an economic repair IMO, otherwise I'd write it off.

Couple of problems with that $299 machine. It has single core processor, and only 1GB of RAM. Since it's Vista, I wouldn't buy it.

1GB RAM - $11.99

:)
For someone (like say Mom) that doesn't do much more than surf sites like Overstock, HomeShoppingNetwork and Amazon, do some email, view photos, maybe burn a DVD or two, etc., what else do they really need. At a measly $299 it's almost like an appliance such as a toaster, VCR/DVD player, microwave, TV etc.. Who cares what's inside. Does it work?, great; no?, get another. :)

Greetings,, Today 12/01. I swapped the power supply from a working machine and slipped it into the EMachine...... and the power light came on MB. I pressed the start button with no response. I did discover that if you remove the main MB connector and replace the cpu fan will run. No graphics on the monitor.... I cannot hear activity from the HD. But the HD light stays on continuously....... So at this point Im leaning to a bad MB.... Input greatly appreciated.. Thanks

I would say that is about par for the course when one of those crappy Emachine power supplies fails, they usually take out the motherboard, and maybe a few other bits too.
-
And with that.. any good recomondations on a replacement? I know this fellow watches his dollars........ a more dependable, model. :D
-
Well I'm firmly in the build-your-own camp myself. But for a good, cheap, reliable, ready-built PC, I think Dell would be where I would look first.
-
For example, Dell Vostro 200 - $389.00 ... and that includes a Dell 20" Widescreen LCD monitor
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...vostrodt_200mt- Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core E2200 (2.20GHz,1MB L2Cache,800FSB) (others available)
- 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz - 2DIMMs (for 2GB add $30)
- 160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™ (for 250GB add $10)
- 16X DVD+/-RW Drive (add a 48X CD Burner/DVD Combo for $10)
- Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 (other options available)
- Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio (other options available)
- (Add a Dell 19-in-1 Media Card Reader for $30)
- Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic, Service Pack 1 (for XP add $99)
- Dell's standard USB keyboard and scroll mouse
- (Speakers start at $20, Dell A525 2.1 w/subwoofer $40)
- Dell 20 inch Widescreen E207WFP Analog Flat Panel Display
- 1 Year Basic Limited Warranty and 1 Year NBD On-Site Service

Thanks for the insight all. I did tell him to call Dell, explain his computer needs and go from there.......... this fellow watches his $ religously......... at first he inquired about getting a new MB and trying to get this thing going...... I just told him it would not be in his best interest to do so...........
-
Are mb’s and cpu’s usually interchangeable from one E-machine to another, even though the pc may be a different model #? Thanks
-
what are the model number?
466IS it would not be worth swapping in.
-
I got this question from the same party with the T2984. I have no idea what he has in mind or what he is doing..... I thought he would have made a decision by now..... I guess it was a dumb post....... he just watches his dollars....
-
He could replace the motherboard, memory, CPU, AND POWER SUPPLY with something far better that what the e-machine had originally for $170.
Power supply - ThermalTake 430 - $43
Motherboard - $50
CPU $50
Memory - $25
Total $168 + Shipping

Some people just love to spend a pound to save a penny
