BTW, Dell's Technical Support home page for the Vostro Notebook 1500 is located here:
Thanks for the help Just got to work will try later after work and will post results....Kspeel
starts with error code 0146
tryed everything and still stalls /not lock up but goes no further
I bought a new Vostro 1400 this summer and had nothing but trouble. Sent it back for repair and it still booted to a blue screen. Had it replaced with a new one and it blue screen crashed too. I took a chance and bought 2 new sticks of memory @ BestBuy and the 2nd 1400 has ran fine ever since. So, based on my experiences, my first thought is the memory is bad. And Dell's replacement memory is no better...
Looks like "error code 0146" may be caused by a failing hard drive:

Back on this item again..when trying to boot from operating disk getting blue screeen and saying video card failed to initilize..Try an ultimate boot disk I downloaded to try to let me in and got an error saying the system32/hal.dll was missing or corrupt. Is there a bootable disk I can make that would install that file?
One solution that's worked for me:
- Remove the hard drive with the missing HAL.DLL file out of that machine and temporarily attach it to a working machine, either as a Slave drive or via USB.
- Let's say this drive will now be drive X:. Copy the "x:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\hal.dll" file to the "x:\windows\system32" folder. If it prompts if it's ok to overwrite, answer yes.
- Move the hard drive back to it's original location, cross your fingers and boot the machine.
Basically familiar with desktops and replace alot of HD's but not real familiar with laptops..Can you give me a quick where its at and is is compatible with a desktop...
How to remove|replace the hard drive in a Dell Vostro 1500 (and Inspiron 1520/1521):Note: Power down and remove all power (including the battery) before you begin.
Here is an example of what I use to hook up hard drives to another PC via USB:
Supersparks I did what you said and nothing happened except now instead of the windows xp startup screen bar continuially running it locks up their after 30 secs or so. I got it hooked up to my computer and can see all the files. is there anything from here we can run and scan . I scaned for viruses and found to trojon ones that was quarentined. Trojon horse downloader fraud loader and trojon horse pfw.generic6....
I bought rocket fish harddrive inclosure kit and that is what the laptop hd is hooked up to, Is there anyway to reinstall windows using that?

It seems like the myths:are die-hard ones.
- it is not possible to install XP on USB devices
- well, you can, but it won't be portable
In a nutshell:
- it is possible to install XP on partitioned USB devices
- it is possible, with a few shortcomings, to make it portable between different machines
Points of note are:
- the procedure is DEFINITELY complex, outside the "reach" of the average user, as it needs a deep knowledge of the internals and lots of tweaking/troubleshooting, exception made for the "automated" way supplied by the said USBOOT.ORG, which, if it works on your particular hardware, is reletively simple
- Nonetheless, once having a build successfully running on a given PC, modifying it to make it "portable" has to be done manually and is as well fairly complex.
- unless you have a VLK license, it may be an infringement of the EULA, expecially in the case of OEM licenses
- it might be necessary to use files from beta's (like LONGHORN) or from other Microsoft products, like Server 2003 or XP embedded, which again, without an appropriate VLK or specific license, may constitute an infringement of the EULA
AVG scaned this drive and found lots of trojon and other viruses but when I click to remove them it doesnt....need lots of help here guys and girls
If the hardware is testing good ... at this point, I'd be tempted to start over (reinstall windows).
Ran Trojanscan on the drive and found numerous trojan viruses but could not fix them it said
1) DBAN, 2) partition, 3) format, and 4) install the OS should get rid of them. :)
Dban has me stumped boys...never heard of it....please clear this up with me
Okay googled dban and tryed it ...couldnt get it to burn on cdr so put on flash drive and it saw it...It started the wipe and when done says no errors found and usually means bad sectors
Next steps: 1) boot from the XP CD, 2) create a partion, 3) format the partion, and 4) install XP.
