i accidentally remove all microsoft.net framework. I tried reinstalling microsoft.net framework 1.1 but there is an error. It was stated ' Microsoft.net framework set up failed. if the problem continues, contact product support service'. What should i do now? i have very little knowledge about 'Microsoft.net framework'. Now i can't even run simple program such as 'paint', 'notepad' and 'window media player'. please help. thanks
Try uninstalling all versions of the .NET Framework, then reinstall:
- Remove the .NET Framework.
- Click Start | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs.
- Make a note of all versions of the .NET Framework installed on the computer.
- Uninstall all the versions of the .NET Framework.
- When you are prompted, restart the computer.
- Use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to clean up the MSI database state for all the versions of the .NET Framework.
- Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
- Install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility as an administrator or as a user account that is a member of the local Administrators group.
- Click Start | All Programs | Windows Install Cleanup.
- In the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, remove all Windows Installer applications for the .NET Framework.
- Restart the computer.
- Download and then reinstall, in the following order, all the versions of the .NET Framework that were previously installed on the computer:

spywaredr, i did everything u asked me to, i installed all the microsoft framework above but i still cannot run 'paint', 'window media player' and 'notepad'. Now, what's the problem?
Notepad, Paint, and WMP should not need any of the .net framework versions. Please post the exact error message(s) you are getting when trying to run these programs.
dun have any message. it's just that when i try to run these programs, nothing appears.
Use Explorer to search for the Notepad.exe file. If it is not found, then you will need to reinstall it. If it is found, what happens when you double click on it?

i search with window explorer and found notepad. i doubleclick it and nothing happens
If you double click on Notepad.exe and no Notepad windows pops up, click Start, Run, and enter 'taskmgr' in the Run box and click OK. check the Programs and Processes tab for notepad. If you don't see it, then you may have some malware on your system that is causing the problem. Read the instructions for posting a HijackThis log so we can check your computer for malware.
eh what i found earlier was 'notepad' not 'notepad exe'. so i have to reinstall notepad now?
You may want to set Windows Explorer to show file extensions, at least temporarily. Double click on My Computer, then click Tools, Foldder Options, View tab, and uncheck Hide File Extensions for Known File Types.
ok. i found 'notepad.exe' i double click and nothing appears.

so failing the HJT test, what happens when you right click notepad.exe and go to properties?
try going to add/remove programs => add/remove windows components => accessories => untick paint and notepad and select ok => ok => ok and you will see them uninstalling. Follow the same procedure again but this time tick them to reinstall
when i right click notepad.exe. something pop out and show me 'general', 'shortcuts' and 'compatibility' of notepad.

I use this method but i could not find 'notepad' in that list. i tried using your method on 'paint' but it doesn't help at all. i still counldn't run paint.

Try copying Notepad.exe (or Paint.exe) to Notepad.com or PadNote.exe (or Painter.com) and then double clicking on the .com file, and let us know what happens. It could be a virus preventing certain application names or .exe files from running, or the .exe extension not being recognized by Windows.
where do i paste it?
You can paste the copies anywhere. The Desktop will work. The idea is to rename the files and/or change the extension to see if you can run them. You might also post the file sizes and creation date and time for the original Notepad, Paint, etc. files so we can check them to make sure they are what they should be.
when i rename 'notepad.exe' to 'notepad.com' i can run notepad finally.

Can you run any .exe files, or are all of them affected?
i don't think all of them are affected, i can run QuickTimePlayer.exe,SDFiles.exe and many others
You can try running the System File Checker, as outlined below:
Get your WinXP CD handy, then go to Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes (you don't get any report from the System File Checker, it just silently replaces and corrupt or missing system files that it finds).
If that doesn't fix the problem, you can try a Repair Install:
Boot the computer from your Windows XP CD.
When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen press [Enter] to start the Windows Setup.
Note: Do not choose
"To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R",
(you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press [R] to start the repair. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.
Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will then continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

I'd start with running:
sfc /scannow
at Command Prompt.

You need Windows CD, though.
tried ur method but doen't seem to help at all. problems remain.
Time to save that which you would hate to lose and then do a clean install. :(
Although I would try a chkdsk /r just to see what happens after saving everything.

Your HijackThis log looked clean.
Did you try the "sfc /scannow"?
Did you try the Repair install?

As Train said, you may need to reinstall Windows.
As a last resort, you could try creating a new user account, and the log in using that new account. Make sure to make it an administrator account. It is posssible, though unlikely, that you have a corrupt user profile.

no other ways? i hate reformatting.
So do I, but had to do it anyway yesterday to 2 laptops.
And the desktop is not going to be touched until they come up with the OS cd.
