The only firewall monitored is the built in Vista Firewall. Any other firewall installed is unrecognized and it reports that there is no firewall in the system. I have tried several methods found in Google to correct the problem, but nothing works. The most popular is the one where you delete the Repository folder. It did not work in my system.
Tried Zone Alarm, Comodo and PC tools firewalls, none of them will show up in the Security Center.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks Broni, I did several times, unsuccessfully. Only the Vista FW shows, others ignored and it tells me that I have no firewall in the system.
Is Vista firewall turned off?
Vista firewall is off. I also tried Webroot, same problem.
The only option, I can see is to just open Security Center in Control panel, and...
Click the arrow button next to Firewall to expand the section, and then click Show me my available options.
Click I have a firewall solution that I'll monitor myself.
Thanks, I did just that. Seems like my Vista just does not get along with any third party firewall.
Having other problems also, but all are OK with the built in firewall. I will stay with that until MS (or someone else) will resolve this puzzle.
What other problems are?
I went back to McAfee and that resolved all the problems. May be it's Avast free was the problem?

Hmmm...McAfee, and Norton are in the same basket IMO...Don't touch...
No real problems with McAfee, slightly slower system, but negligible.
Update: McAfee is gone, worst than all the others! Back to Avast and Vista FW.
Do not be surprised if you end up doing a clean install of Vista to speed up your computer.
McAfee leaves a ton of junk when uninstalled.
I did and it was worth the trouble. Yes it came preinstalled on my laptop.
Bought Vista and did a clean install. Worth it to me.
My Vista came with Norton, but I was able to kill any trace of it.
But after 5 trips through the regs, I got tired.
So far I've spent two hours on the phone with a Microsoft tech support without any real answer to the problem. He will get back to me today, after some more "research".
MS's reply was (sure you can guess it) "Reinstall the operating system".
My answer was: NO.
I wouldn't bother, either.
There is another problem: I can not uninstall Vista Service Pack 1. Uninstall goes through the process and at the end an error: "Uninstall was unsuccessful, reverting back to the previous version." A search on Google shows that others have the same problem and some suggests to remove virus and firewall programs before uninstall SP1. That did not work for me. Any other suggestions?
Are you using Windows Updates, or standalone download?
I used the downloaded version, MS just "escalated" this problem to another, hopefully better informed support person.

Three very long sessions with MS support, got me absolutely nowhere, (almost like talking to Dell) so I guess I just have to search some more and may be something will come up. Thanks for trying Broni!

I look at it this way...you know, that you have all security tools installed, so who cares what Security Center says.
You're not alone, and this is known problem for SC not reporting some security programs correctly.
So far I've had five (!) sessions with MS technical support, seems like this might go on forever....
As of the last session the response is: "we have to do more research".
I gave up on the problem, but now I am curious, as to how long it might take the "experts" to resolve this problem.

My Vista correctly reports Eset Security Suite components without any effort on my part. Must have something to do with Vista drivers supplied with the other security programs.
x71s8zTN, it could be the Vista drivers, but I have tried six different Vista firewalls, (McAfee, Webroot, PC tools, Zone Alarm, Fort Knox and Comodo) and they all give me the same error. This makes me believe that the problem is with my Vista operating system. Reloading is not an option.
I gave up on MS. After about (I lost count) 10 long phone sessions they had no real clue as to what causes the problem. Eventually it will probably cure itself with a mysterious update!
Frankly speaking, in my opinion, if problem is not getting solved on forums like this one, counting on M$ help is rather hopeless.
Broni, you are absolutely correct, I didn't really expect a resolution from M$, only my curiosity kept me on the phone with them. There is another advantage to this forum, I can understand the language!

Well put Broni. Examples:
1. Losing internet connection. Two long telephone sessions with Dell Tech left to his suggestion that I "Return to the factory condition" (Must be a new Dell corporate motto). A few days later a remark by one of the Moderators dealing with unrelated problem that restart often cures minor Windows irregularities gave me a clue. I stopped putting my desktop to sleep, and shut it off every day. Problem solved.
2. Now to SP 1. After seven attempts at installing SP!, three of them under MS Tech's supervision, and many hours of trying this and that, the magic phrase re-apered: "Return to factory condition". I foolishly succumbed this time, and SP1 got installed, confirmed by the system screen. As all good things come to an end my computer crashed on the next boot the following morning. Had to recover with Acronis rescue disk. Fortunately I made an image just prior to my adventurous return to the factory condition.
