I have a Dell Optiplex GX270 with plenty of memory and wonder why it takes about 5 min before i can get on the Internet using Internet Explorer after the PC has booted up. The same thing happens after I'm on and lock the PC with Zone Alarm if I'm away for a while from the PC then if I want to get back on, I wait and wait. I eventually reboot.
Unless after loading XP the default of the PC is to search for Updates?
Any ideas what I can do or check some settings?:confused:
Task manager processes tab? Is it huge?
Start|Run|Msconfig? Is is huge?
Cleared out temp files/TIF/Cache/Cookies etc?

what about renewing your IP address??
Are you using a router that gives the PC an IP address using DHCP? The problem might be there. After booting up, go to the Command Prompt and type "ipconfig /all" without the quotes, and see if the IP address, etc. are all in order.
I have a wireless router but the PC is using the RJ45 cable into the router.
I notice if I go away from the PC for an hour or 2 it happens even when Zonealarm is not locked. I id notice that when I shutdown zonealarm I can get on. Maybe I need to uninstall it and reinstall it if I don't see anything in the settings that look out of place.
It could be a ZA problem. As you are behind a router, it would be safe to leave ZA turned off for a bit to make sure that it rerally is the problem. Otherwise it could be what I said before, and be a problem with the PC getting an IP address from the router's DHCP server, if the lease is set to a short period.
Open your router.
Check your Client Lease Time
If it says 0, which the default change the ip number every 24 hours. (0 means one day)
I got tired of that mess and set mine for 14400 minutes.

ZA will mess things up, sometimes horribly. Like have to do a clean install after it messes up. Why I do not like it myself.
You don't mention it that I can see, but make sure you have only one A/V installed. Having two installed at the same time will slow things down to a crawl while they examine each other's quarantine files, etc.
I have Etrust Antivirus and Zone Alarm firewall. If I shutdown Zonealarm I can get on, then I can start up Zone Alarm. It's a pain.
Is Windows XP firewall good enough instead of Zone Alarm?
The truth is that I never found a single software firewall that didn't break something or other. I bought a decent hardware firewall/router (Netgear ProSafe DGFV338), and use that in conjunction with the built-in Vista firewall (which is pretty good), and now I'm happy at last. Everything does what it should :)
And is the XP Firewall good enough?
On XP, no, not by itself, as it is only one-way. The built-in Vista firewall takes care of traffic both inbound and outbound, the XP firewall does not.Quote:

Though I question how much that is really worth. All it does is alert you to an already infected machine "phoning home". Useful, but not essential IMO, it's better not to get infected in the first place. Provided you are aware that it won't alert you to suspicious outbound traffic, the the XP firewall is perfectly adequate, though I would much prefer to use it in conjunction with a router that at least has NAT on it, or better still a proper SPI firewall. The Windows firewall then becomes a second line of defence, for which it is just fine.
Why did I not have this problem with my last PC which was a P4 clone compared to this Dell?

Different drivers, different software. That's the problem with ZA, it doesn't get on with everything that it has to co-exist with.Quote:

It's also a good idea to clean out the DHCP cache occasionally also. Just go into Network Connections,doubleclick the LAN connection icon>click on support tab>click the 'repair' button then re-boot. This can speed your connection up considerably...
