Alternative to Flash?
I wanted to see how much of flash-like effects could be accomplished without using flash.
Below is a mockup of a header I created, intended to mimic a flash header, but without using Flash at all
http://www.jpages.net/biscotti/biscotti.htm
It's a lot of work, however. But then I don't know how much work it is to do it in Flash. Might be the same for all I know. But the good news is, it would be search engine friendly, where Flash definitely isn't, at least not at the present.
-
Good going. My guess is no one wanted to do the background work and used Flash.
-
Well I'm not sure that doing it in Flash is any easier. You still have to code actionscripting to get stuff to move around, and such. It might not be any different. But beyond that, with flash you have to worry if the user will see it or not. If someone doesn't have the flash player, or the wrong version of it, if they have javascript disabled, or if they use IE with activeX disabled, they won't see the flash stuff. With this the only issue is having javascript disabled. 1 vulnerability is better than 4.

Pretty cool......
Took a peek at your source code and the javascript file you call. I was surprised it wasn't larger. Amazing what you can do with a little script.....
I like flash, to be honest....but don't like it in advertising. Flash also offers a little bit more image protection for people wanting to display their graphic work without having it lifted easily (although there are still ways to get those images). Using your method....the images cache in the TIF.;)
Nice work.....:)
-
Not much, I mean you can take a screen shot and crop out the image you want with no quality loss. That's what the world of digital brought.
-
Agreed.....no image is secure.....;)
I have a flash decompiler that will extract everything from a flash file too....
I tinkered with flash awhile back...and the easy interface of proggies like Swish make it a breeze. I think you did a fine job with the scripting, but I think flash is here to stay and it (or it's spawn) is the future of web design. People like bells and whistles.....LOL:D
Most sites are now going to the Flash player for video content now. Makes it tougher to snag videos now....but they still can be gotten.;)
-
Yeah, that's an annoyance for me. I tend to surf with activeX disabled and IE (or any IE shell) can't load the flash player without activeX.

You'll love this Joe: http://www.swfbb.com/forums/ Although it isn't too popular yet, the Admin on there has 4 posts, and the forums have 9 total.

Wow....a forum done completely in Flash.......
First time I ever saw that......
-
Was just a big red X to me. I never use all flash sites.
-
1 more advantage that header has over flash, it's scalable. It will span the screen at any resolution, the only difference being the number of head shots you'll see. Flash isn't scalable.
-
I believe it is....but since you don't have it turned on...you won't see it.....:D

Also...I believe setting the flash parameters to percentage rather than pixels will do it. If a table cell is set to 100% and the flash inside it is set to 100%....it should span. I think.....LOL
Been awhile since I tinkered.....
-
It is? Wow, I've yet to see that used. I didn't always surf with it disabled, I only began doing that about a yr +.
-
Just curious......I have seen a few people that refuse to surf with Flash enabled. How come?
Flash ads are very annoying, no question....but there is so much good content out there in Flash that it easily balances out. Surfing without Flash, to me.....is like watching only network television and not any cable channels. :D
-
Has nothing to do with Flash ads, it's just that I keep activeX disabled until I come across a site where I really need it (like online virus scans), and IE or the IE shell I use, can't load flash without it.
But regarding all-flash sites, those I refuse to use. I use mouse gestures for most everything, and they don't work in Flash. Neither do most of the 8 buttons on my mouse. The back button does nothing, forward, etc. You can't copy text and it takes too long to load. Beyond that, no matter WHAT they tell you, adopey is downloading something other than the flash player when you DL that. I saw a yahoo something or other even though I had unchecked it before DLing.
I just despise flash as a technology. It's not HTML/CSS, it doesn't run in your browser. It obeys none of the rules of a webpage.
-
Oh, and password managers don't work, and the regular windows dropdown of stored info won't work with flash text boxes either. So many things don't work that it's quite easy for me to dislike it.
-
Your reasons are legitimate....but your resolution (and that of some others) to sort of pretend that those sites don't exist has me a bit confused. Seems you are missing out on a lot of the net experience because you won't know it's even there. As I say....sites are going Flash for displaying multimedia content now. I think even some of the news sites are using it now in place of of standard media players.
I always download the latest player....and they do try to push a toolbar or some other plug-in on you...but so far it has always obeyed my selection to take nothing but the player.
Well...to each his own I guess. I was just curious.....;)

I have my browser setup so that a quick L/R click will open firefox with the current page loaded. Firefox doesn't use activeX so it can load the flash player without it, when there's something I really wanna see.
-
I heard Hillary say that when she becomes president.....Flash will be mandatory on all computers......
:D
-
lmao Maxx ... you trying to make JP have a coronary?
:D
-
Won't affect me. I'll be living in the UK at that time.
-
She also plans to ban javascript......
Something about second-hand script causing cancer in non-javascript users.....:D :p
-
Unless she can convince Tony's successor as PM to do the same, I'm not worried.
