I'm about to buy a DVD burner and want to ensure that I get one that can burn CD's in addition to DVD's. I think this one will, but thought I'd ask before I purchase it. The specs say:
SAMSUNG 18X DVD±R Burner, LightScribe Technology, IDE, Model SH-S182M/BEBN - OEM
8X DVD±R DL, 8X DVD+RW
6X DVD-RW, 32X CD-RW
12X DVD-RAM, 2 MB Cache

All DVD burners will read/write CDs as well, so you have no need to worry whichever brand you get. I hear some of the Blu-Ray drives that are coming out may not handle CDs though.
I like LG drives, they will do all formats, including DVD-RAM, and I have them in both of my desktop PC's. I think Newegg do them, but the site is down at the moment.

Yep, it will, CD-R's @ 48X, and CD-RW's @ 32X.

Does anyone know if ALL MAKES of DVD/CD re-writers are on the Linux/BSD/Unix compatibility list, being 'generic' IDE/USB devices now? Is Blu-Ray?
Just wondered since playing with these as alternate to Windows. Is this thread in the right place anyway? ;)

They are flaunting 18X capabilities when 18X discs aren't available yet, and don't even get me started on Dual Layer discs, Lightscribe is also a bit of a gimmick, but i'd probably try it a few times for themed discs, and i've noticed Samsung and Sony make similar drives to that spec for about £20 online, so that can't be argued with.

I just bought that same Samsung model about a month a go....
I still can't get it to burn a DVD. Very possible the trouble is on my end or the Nero software....but if I can't figure it out soon....I am taking it back.
As I say....not sure if the trouble is me, the software or the hardware....but just wanted to let you know where I stand with that particular model.
Hey Maxx, what version of Nero, and what happens when you try. Because my trusty old Nero 6.6 won't burn DVDs on my latest build, but if I boot into Vista on the same PC I can use the built-in DVD burning utility with no problem. You may be getting the same as me, that the drive is too new for Nero.
It comes with a Nero Software bundle.....

I never did any DVD burning before...this is my first one....which is why I consider the possibility that trouble lies with me. When I try to burn data to a DVD using the Express wizard-type GUI, it runs, says it is burning, announces it has completed successfully......
But there is never anything on the disc whne I pop it in....it shows as blank. :confused:
It didn't work when I was running XP SP2 or now running SP1......
Using special Lightscibe DVD discs. I haven't tried the scribe feature yet....but looks neat.

Have you tried using DVD Shrink?
BTW: I use Lightscribe takes about 20 minutes to burn one lable. Quality has not been perfected, but it's neat and they look cool..
Thanks for sharing your experiences with this unit, Max. I have a new Lite-On DVD burner that burns reliably. The main reason that I want to get another burner is so that I can try out the LightScribe technology. To my knowledge, I've not yet seen a label created with it, but it sounds like some really cool stuff. :cool: It's worth a shot!Quote:

Murf....good to see ya. Not sure if Shrink will help me out in this case. But I do think I will try some no-frills freebie burning software and see what happens. I have to determine if it is me, Nero or Samsung that is screwing up.
I second the use of DVD Shrink, works perfectly for me, also for making labels, I use a little program that comes with the Memorex cd & labelmaker kits, it's called Express-it. You can get the kit at K-Mart or Wal-mart for about 20.00. Comes with a bunch of stick on labels also. BJ
Hey BJ, you should be careful of using those stick-on labels - they are known to cause data loss on CDRs and DVDrs (the adhesive attacks the top layer).
Maxx, here's another freeware DVD burning app - it would be worth trying if only to determine whether the problem lies with the drive or with Nero.

I had problems with Nero Express burning DVD's but their other program "Nero Vision Express" burned them quite nicely. So you might want to try that one, Maxx.
A couple of things when burning data dvd's in Nero: Be sure it is set to close the disk after the burn. Also,use the 'UDF' file option when burning data dvd's...

I'll try some of these out tonight or tomorrow...but right now I am learning to fly with MS Flight Sim 2004. Ever since Flight Sim X hit the shelves....2004 got downright cheap, so I snagged one, today.
I tried landing a 747 at a small municipal airport. It didn't go well..... :eek:

Heck that sounds a lot like Air SuperSparks. You get a reasonable take off, and most of the time the aircraft will be the right way up during flight, but safe landings at an actual airport are rare indeed :eek:
My fares are very reasonable though, just bring enough money for the taxi fare to get you from whichever field we end up in :D

You would think that if the drive could make the disc...it should be able to read it too.....no?
In any case....Nero seems to be part of the problem since it did nothing.
Also tried the Lightscribe.....
The image is very faint....but then again I did nothing to prepare it in terms of brightness or contrast. The image I picked was already in greyscale, so the program didn't have to do any converting. I will try another in the future and boost the contrast and darken the image and see if the results are better.
All things considered...this being my first foray into DVD burning....I already miss CD burning and don't plan to convert any more machines to DVD. :D
A month ago, I had not seen any labels that were created by using LightScribe. Since getting that cool DVD burner from Newegg, I have created several labels on CD and DVD with LightScribe. Though it is a slow process as it writes the image to the media, the result is really nice. (For what it's worth, the "Best" setting in the Nero Cover Designer makes a more attractive image than the "Normal" setting. Normal is the default unless you tell it otherwise.)Quote:
