A little math problem

Most of us here have probably worked with subnetting, converting decimal to binary and hex... but I was recently asked to convert something to base7... How would one go about this?

With base 16 we can use a graph like this to help us figure it out:

So would a base7 be like this? (using 0-6)

That's correct. For any given base X, working from right to left the columns will be X° (1), X¹, X², X³, and so on.

I am with an academic team and I was asked to convert yadda yadda to base7.

btw, I DID search google but it just didnt help much :(

well in base 7 that would be 60 if i'm not mistaken.

Not sure what base is being used to get 83.

Because it shows that you know the theory behind it, not just how to push the base button on your calculator. :)

Edit: .....THERES A BASE BUTTON!? :eek: TI83 has too many buttons!!

Well mine just has buttons for binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal, but it is about 13 years old. If a calculator was around which let you convert to arbitrary bases from 2..36, I'd be mildly impressed. :)

Here you go, for your delicatation and delight, a calculator that will convert between any base from 2 to 36 :)

It's still pretty rough around the edges, but the calculation engine is working nicely. I had some fun this weekend programming it. It requires .NET Framework 2 to be installed, otherwise just unzip it and double-click to run.
