Re-installed Win98 but NO sound

hello everyone...

i had to re-install Win98 on my HP8580C.

i then went to the hp drivers site & installed the appropriate drivers.

i have also added my virus & pop up sites.

so, all seems to be ok BUT then I have since noticed that i have no sound...i checked & the plug is in...is there a program that i need to download to get sound?

sorry, i sound so dumb about computers....but i am...so i need all the help that i can get & hopefully this is something really, really easy.


plus, while i'm at it...is there anything else that i should be sure is connected on this computer before i give it back to my daughter @ school???
(any advice will be appreciated; as she is annoyed enough with me as it is)

Just so you know what is installed on your pc, download Everest Home edition from my sig below.
It will tell you what sound card/device you have, and all the info on your pc......then you can go from there.
I'm not far ahead of you in this pc world "technically", but can appreciate your angst, being it's your daughter... ;) :)

Don't you have Windows Media Player, now that I think of it....duh me.....maybe you just need drivers .......getting in over my head, perhaps someone will jump in.

edit:...maybe it's there but I don't see your audio or Windows media plaer which would give you sound and video.....it could be a sound card, if in fact there is audio.

On the majorgeeks page there is Windows Media Player, and Jet Audio, which I've seen several forum posters recommend. Just so you know. But wait til someone more knowledgeable then me jumps in.

LDThornton...thanks for the site suggestion BUT as i tried to follow it, and it really doesn't apply...when i check startup/control panel/sounds...there is no name in the sound box...when i check multimedia/audio...there are no devices in the playback or recording boxes.

step 1..of course, i checked the plugs, fuses and connections (i have speaker out)

step 2...can't check volume & mute settings because when you check contol panel/sound...there is NO volume because there is no device there

step 3 ...not the trouble

step 4...no help...still no sound

step 5...i thought this would do it!!! but that site suggests checking the "hp tools" the only item there is the keyboard (which i installed when i did the drivers in the hp site)....there was NO application or anything else!!!

step 6 talks about updating from the hp support or windows update site...there is nothing about downloading/re-installing the sound driver in the hp support but i did do a critical download of a windows update...installing the "windows media player" was successful BUT...i get the video BUT NO SOUND...even when i turn my volume knob where the volume is shown on the bottom of the screen as green lines...i get nothing!!!

step 7 just reiterates that i have no sound/audio/etc...as there is no sound reference of any kind in the device manager

step 8, windows did not find any new hardware & i don't know of any hp site to re-install the original drivers !!!!


how can i get my computer to re-install the original driver?????

You either have a sound card installed in the computer OR you have an on-board sound provision. I just visited the info in the following c/p and you may or may not have done the several steps listed dealing with opening My Computer on the desktop and following the steps in this c/p:

1) i have the on board NVIDIA RIVA TNT as per the display adapter category info

2) my system met the requirements & i already had downloaded the program that your link refers me to...it is one of about 5 drivers that i installed after i re-installed win98 as these where the drivers on the hp driver site for 8580c computers...but i did it again & still no sound. (although, it is a "video" program...is it also audio????)

3) i believe that the driver was a part of my computer as i don't remember a separate disc or pak or chip that i had to put in or deal with...although, let me add a disclaimer...i don't remember what i got for xmas 2005 yet alone remember how a computer that i got about 6 years ago was put together.

4) BTW.....you have a fantastic memory...yes this is my dtr's & she's going to kill me when i try to give her a computer that doesn't have sound!!!! i was hoping to give this to her all in working order even though she was upset to hear that i LOST everything in her computer with the 98 re-install & now i'm going to give her a computer w/o any sound!!!! i can hear it now and the sound will be from her not her computer!!!

5) if there are no other ideas...should i try to get a sound card for this computer? the only problem is that hp no longer maintains this computer since it's over 5 years old....does anyone have an extra sound board or whatever it's called that they can mail me????

i just had a thought...there's something that i haven't mentioned because i didn't think that it mattered BUT since i seem to be at a stand still..maybe it does.

after i re-installed win98...i wasn't able to get online...i have dsl with a modem from my isp (local telephone co)....i tried everything but nothing occured. when i 1st got this...my daughter's computer wasn't involved but i had been able to connect it to the dsl on previous occasions w/o having to do anything extra.

my isp agreed to come out & put in one of their ethernet boards. they put it in the slot next to the ethernet board that was already there. they then downloaded the 1st driver (see buf's suggestion) on the hp site & that's how i got on-line.........so could getting this new ethernet board also do something to my sound????

Has a complete checklist of things to check and do for your model of HP puter.
Belarc file shows no sound card etc. present - that is why you have no sound. You either need to install drivers for your soundcard(if it is an addon card), or activate the onboard sound in your BIOS as per the site above. The nVidia stuff is for video, not sound.

The two NICs shouldn't really cause a problem since only one has active drivers installed. I would remove the one that is not being used - personal choice tho

frums: thanks for the site BUT i've already did every step (see my reply at 7:20 yesterday to LDThornton post, which also gives the site)
although i should mention that when i was doing step 4 of the instructions "configuring on-board sound in the BIOS", in my advanced tab there was no onboard audio options; so, as instructed i clicked on the i/o device configuration. however, on that page there was nothing similar to audio/sound or anything like it...there was just :
serial port A, serial port B, parallel port & floppy disk controller ....all were enabled.....should i have disabled any of them????
i didn't change anything but i did follow the later instructions about unplugged the power cord etc...BUT still NO sound ???


although on my other post about the contents of sites are larger than my screen in almost all web sites i believe someone (i think Professor U)suggested that there may be a corrupted file in my IE..but i posted that i wasn't real confortable about removing the ie...he posted back that i didn't have to add/remove it but there should be a "repair" choice....there wasn't...when i clicked on the add/remove button, the message box pops up advising that "this will uninstall IE Q867282 & restores to my previous configuration" do i want to do this???

i'm getting quite desparate at this point...i have the on-board sound but does that mean that there's a physical card inside my computer that perhaps i can take out...blow away some dirt & dust & reinstert that my solve my problem....for some reason...my computer doesn't recognize that it has any sound card anywhere !!!! There appears NOT to be a sound card physically installed in the computer. Instead, it is on board because it is "built in" your Motherboard. Nothing you can remove, physically.
On your desktop, right click on My Computer and then select Hardware/Device Manager and look for any item referring to sound. When you find that, check to see if there are any yellow ! or question marks; etc anything out of order. I do not have win98 open on this computer and cannot be more direct in these instructions---am going only on memory. I wish you well.
Oh, be sure your speakers are plugged into the correct "holes" in the back of your PC and is not muted.

x71s8zTN...yes, i also checked it out after reading your post & this time i didn't get discontinued but was sent to the major geeks site to download (which i haven't done yet) did i do something wrong or was something changed?? oh well never mind..doesn't matter at this point,since got info from the other site....if you'll look, NO SOUND card is installed.

last nite, i was thinking about my two (known) problems that i'm having with the computer since i had to re-install win98se...NO SOUND & the contents of every site is larger than my screen...so i have to use the slide bar to view the site, which happens on just about ALL sites now & wasn't a problem before.
Since, i haven't been successful at fixing either problem, i've taken note that basically 2 things have been changed from when i started out & perhaps someone can tell me if either one is my prolem or at least how i can check to eliminate them as possible sources. :

1) when i re-installed win98se...i did not use the original disk that came with my computer...i had to get a copy from a friend (please note that i used my authenticity codes...so no copyright troule there)

2) after installing win98se...i couldn't get on the internet & eventually had to have my isp (my local telephone co) come out & install their ethernet card. it'a a "CNet 100/10 Mbps fast ethernet card". they installed it in the next slot to the original one. why wouldn't the original one work??? the tech couldn't say & advised me that it really should have. should the tech have done something to make the sound work? i believe that he just downloaded the keyboard driver.

can either be responsible for one or both of my problems???

You have 2 Win98SE installation disks!! Does your friend from whom you borrowed a CD have any problems with his PC; especially along the lines of trouble that you are having? I have to assume not.
Since you have found your original installation disk, I see no problem with what you suggested in an earlier post---start over. I also assume you have nothing to be saved on the present installation.
Before you do, I vaguely recall that you can do a "reinstall" over the present installation of the OS. If you find that you can and know how to do that, you may want to try it but use YOUR original CD only because the borrowed one may have a slight scratch on it that maybe caused your present trouble.
BTW, I have always heard the phrase "grasping at straws" rather than "pulling at straws". Makes no difference either way; they both mean virtually the same. :D
Keep letting us know of any progress you make.

Would it not be faster just to buy a $20 sound card and install that ?

Even a cheap card would be better that an onboard anyway ..

General Winters...you're idea sounds great but i was thinking that HP wouldn't have a sound card for this pc, since they told me that don't maintain the pc since it's over 5 years old...but am i able to just pick up a generic sound card... if so, what do i need to look for before i buy ???

A generic sound card would do.

I assume you have a pci slot or 2 free , I think you mentioned a 2nd unused ethernet card you could remove if necessary.

Since its an ancient computer just buy the cheapest card you can find, no need for 5.1/7.1 surround sound support etc.

Plus just check it has drivers for windows 98.

I can only offer this solution. Read through it and think it through before beginning. Good luck should you try it: (and since the "General" out ranks me, you may want to try his suggestion first. You may even be able to deal with a sympathetic vendor who will allow you to return it if it does you no good. OR borrow your friends card, if he has 1)

Reinstall Windows over itself. To reinstall a Windows version on top of itself, follow these steps. First, back up your data and have a startup floppy diskette ready. You will need the startup floppy if your system should crash and you can no longer access startup information needed on the hard drive.

Reinstall after deleting Windows. You can also reinstall Windows by first deleting it from your hard drive but leaving the rest of your system intact. The following are the steps for doing so.

First, follow the instructions in the first three paragraphs for installing Windows on top of itself. Then, delete your Windows folder from the system by inserting your startup diskette into the floppy drive. Then click Start, point to Programs, and choose MS-DOS Prompt. At the prompt, type CD\ and press ENTER. Type a:\ and press ENTER. Type deltree c:\windows /y and press ENTER. After the Windows folder is deleted, type Exit and press ENTER.

Insert the Windows installation CD and restart your system. When you are prompted, choose to boot from your CD and choose to start the system with the Windows installation CD. Follow the instructions on the screen when setup starts. This method of reinstalling Windows gets sticky if you don’t completely delete all Windows files on your hard drive. Setup may respond that you already have an OS installed and will not let you reinstall Windows. If you see this response, try a clean installation.

Excuse me if youve already gone over this but the specifications for that system here specify the Rockwell RipTide combo card under audio.So a quick look brings this driver up as a suitable candidate Pavilion Riptide Audio/Modem Update for North American Countries

General Winters...i went shopping today for a sound card for Win98 SE at bets buy, walmart, radio shack and circuit city but none had any sound cards that would run on a Win 98 SE (or Win 98 for that fact)!!!
i then looked on ebay for "sound card win 98" & they only had 1 up for auction & i'm not sure that this is what i need...so i then checked ebay for just "sound card" and there are about 1000 auctions but as i was reading the info on several...i am getting more confused that when i started with all this & that is really saying something!!!

can anyone recommend a site that will be able to sell me a good sound card that i need for my computer????

104456...when i read your post, i thought that maybe you found the solution to my problem...unfortunately, as i tried to download the file...all was going along fine WHEN a screen popped up advising me to "insert disk labeled RipTide Installation Media" i knew i again was hitting another roadblock...i don't have the disk...i called HP customer service & after finally explaining as clearly & concisely as i could to the rep.; who had as hard a time understanding me as i had understanding his pakistani/east indian/whatever language he was speaking...finally he said that he would transfer me to the disk or parts dept (i couldn't understand what word he was saying)..of course, that dept was closed & will open on monday 7am...i'm sure that HP will want to charge me for this disk, too...but if this will give me sound & the price is reasonable...i'll buy it since, i don't think i can get a card which would be another answer to my problem...

so...i'm at the point that, i'll ask if anyone has either a sound card for win98se, or the riptide disk or a magic wand..i'll be willing to pay for whatever i can get.

amarok-sookgah, you do have patience!!! Lots of this and I am sure your daughter appreciates some of that which you are trying to do for her. She should!! And like me, you may be just a bit stubborn.

Onward to battle:
I have just re-read the Belarc results and there are two items that may need help or further input from someone more knowledgeable than I.

BIOS: Phoenix Technologies LTD 1.03 07/20/99 is outdated and I wonder if there is an update and if there is, would he gain anything from flashing his BIOS?

Explorer Version 5.50.4522.1800 not THAT important but IE6 SP2 would better protect him.

The dialup modem is not reported!! Why? Was it removed in favor of DSL or... This modem quiet likely had the sound integrated. If it was removed by the owner then I assume the daughter had DSL at college and sound also. If that is true then this idea I have is of no value.
The on-board sound setting in the BIOS should be Enabled.
AFTER installing the sound card you bought, did you go into your BIOS and DISABLE the on board sound?

Now as to the "Windows98SE" installation CD; did the CD that you have come with the computer when you bought it new? Surely this is not a "Recovery Disk", is it? There is all the difference in the world of the two types of CDs or Disks. Forgive me for mentioning this if yo already know this. I am probably only a few steps ahead of you in this computer knowledge.

There just has to be something that we, collectively, are overlooking. I have had problems of my own in the past that have lasted for days and days so I know how he must feel.

In a simialr vein just have a look at the back of the PC and ensure you can see similar outlets to this image for the speaker outlet:

but...a few updates...

1) not sure about the BIOS info you wrote about...if there's an update i hope someone can come thru

2) after i did this Belarc results....i did install OE6

3) i originally had dialup in my computer, i then changed from dialup to dsl by my local phone company...i'm not sure exactly what they did to do that in my computer...i had previously unhooked my computer & hooked up my daughters to correct other problems & it went on-line no problem & had sound...but after in re-installed her computer with win98 se...we couldn't get on line soooo i finally had my local phone company come out to put a new ethernet card in her computer (right next to her original card.that i guess came with the computer) it got us on line BUT no sound !!

4) the onboard bios is set enable

5) no sound card has been installed...that's what i think i have to do next but i can't find any at stores because what they have doesn't support win98/se

6)no the re-installation disk was NOT the original that came with the computer...i couldn't find it at that time but was able to get a hold of one from a friend of a friend..i "believe" that it was an installation disk & not a recovery disk...but i don't know the difference between the two. this disk wiped everything out, all the files & programs that we had ...so i assumed it was an installion...but what do i know...i9 have since found the original installation disk.....what can i do NOW ??

2) about your prev post & the site about riptide audio/modem update requesting a disk...i just got done calling hp customer service & they said since the computer is out of date they can't help me but said to go to their contact therm site at hp.com & go on chat & hopefully someone can step me thru this or help me get the sound back (??????)


to all...the bad news: yesterday, i had to take the computer up to my daughter at her school 2hrs. away) she said that AT THIS POINT, she didn't care about no sound because she needed the computer to do school papers, research etc...she didn't want to continue to go to the computer labs...so right now i don't have her computer to double check anything.

the good news is that, she'll be coming home this coming friday nite & will bring her hd with her.,..so that i can try to follow more suggestions from everyone to get this fix especially if i don't get a sound card


SO at this point, i'd appreciate any suggestions from anyone & then when i get the computer back on friday, i'll give an update...

so please if you can think of anything, please post it while it's fresh in your mind.

According to the Sabrent website there are drivers for windows 98

A quick google suggests this is the combo card that should be installed on the system when new:

It could be the card was removed hence no sound.

General Winters...thanks for the link...but when i checked on it...i couldn't see where it'll work with win98 se..please direct me, so that i can better understand this stuff

assuming both can work with win 98se....does anyone know which would be better??? i'm not sure what any of the info about the cards means... i don't need anything fancy, just something to hear music, games,email messages ... you know normal stuff.

Neither are that fancy, as you can tell by the price, the one recommended by General Winters would be a good choice based on price, but the combo card would be good for the fact that it too is cheap and it is a combination of a modem and a soundcard, which means you'll only need to use the one PCI slot.
