eVGA Geforce 6200 AGP 256mb {RESOLVED}

Hi guys. Have a problem here. I just bought this card and tried to install it today to replace my Geforce FX5500. It would not install. No show in BIOS no show in windows. I'm using XP Pro, and I removed old drivers using detonator destroyer. I don't see why that would make a difference if the BIOS doesn't pick it up. The Geforce 5500 is back in the slot and working fine. But I really wanted this new card. See system specs below:

1 gb Kingston DDR266
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (Thermaltake Volcano 11)
GeForce FX5500 (but want Geforce 6200 to work)
40gb Maxtor
200GB WD
DVDRW (LiteOn)
DVDRW DL (Sony)
4 USB devices; Mouse, Trackball, printer and scanner.
Hauppauge WinTV 150

This card does not have a fan on it, nor does it have the extra power connector. I cannot figure out why it doesn't show in P.O.S.T.

The only thing I can think of is that it was not seated properly. But I am sure you'd have checked that.

Yes, I checked......twice. Because as you say, that was your first thought, it was mine too. But no, it was seated correctly and snugly.

Could you check the 6200 in another computer? It might not be working at all.

Yeah, I will tomorrow at work. Right now I'm home and don't have another computer that I could install it in.

I just thought I'd ask here and see if anyone might have an idea or think of something I missed.

Funny my first thought would have been that the card is just not working.

That was my last thought. :D One would think a brand new video card, never out of the box, to work right off. Especially since it's a name brand. Oh, well, I'll take it to work tomorrow and get an RMA number for it. I do have two of these, one for me, one for a Christmas present. So, I'll try the other one too just to be sure it works. If that one is bad too, I'll be ordering something different.

I guess I've just seen enough threads on Vdr where people have had bad cards / mobo etc right off the bat, that it was my first thought.

My first thought was, this better not be a bad card. :D But my hopes that it wasn't bad continued to spiral down. And I have to say.....this is the first ever for me that a video card didn't work. Even my older, 7 year old, PCI video cards still work.

Well, wonder of wonders both cards are dead. I'm RMA'ing them back. Now the seller suggested the problem might be a conflict with the motherboard.......but....I used two different computer with two different motherboards. One Gigabyte and the other an Asus.

Some bad luck there. I don't believe thats its a conflict with the mobos, especially if you tried them on both machines. But what are the chances of them both being bad?

I'd say it's a rare thing to have two of the same make and model video cards being bad. I called our suppliier and they have two Asus of the same model cards. I've got them ordered and they'll be here Wednesday. I've never used either of these video card makers, eVGA or Asus. My present card, a Geforce FX5500 256mb, is made by BFG. What I like about this maker is, their warranty is lifetime.

Never heard of a lifetime warranty on a video card. But thats a great thing. I never heard of eVGA either. Are they a know brand? In any case, I'd stay away from them after your story.

eVGA is a known brand in the states. But I tend to stick with brands like BFG and Chaintech. And yes, I'll never buy another eVGA card.

Update: I got the two Asus cards in and got the one installed in my computer. So far so good after uninstalled the old FX card. Took sometime for the system to pick up the driver on the cdrom though. I found that weird, but both of my optical drives are DVDRW's and slower than my CDRW I had previously. That could have been the problem, but then again, knowing computers like I do, I find that hard to believe......:D

I get to wondering about those dvd-rw for the same reason at times.

Well, Train, I haven't played any graphic intense games yet, so the only thing I can say about this new card is, the monitor seems brighter and more readable. As soon as I get some graphic intense games, I'll try them. I don't play battle field games, only mystery type games. I got this card because it was a deal I couldn't pass up. Only cost me $74. ;)

Good enough reasons to upgrade right there and price is NOT bad either. And you game more than I d. :D

I have a eVGA card in my second desktop, and I do find it to be kinda flakey. If I play a game that uses Direct 3d in any way, after I end the game, the screen gets distorted if I try to play another game. Have to reboot to get it going again.

hacker cracher thanks for the comments. After my experience with eVGA, I'll now stay away from that brand.

And now I'm going to close this thread as my problem has been resolved. More comments are not needed as I've already RMA'd the two cards back to supplier. ;)
