here's an update ...
my friend installed windows and sygate. no problem there.
however, when she went to do the windows update, she ended up at a non-existing page. i myself seem to remember that 98 changed their update page.
anyone know where she can go to get the 98 updates?
(maybe i should move this to the 98 section - except i don't know how)

i tried that link (even tho i'm running xp) before i passed it on to my friend who is trying to update windows 98. i was immediately directed to page http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...&&thankspage=5.
here's what that page says:

this is difficult because i can't email these pages to my friend. i have to read them to her over the phone and we only talk once a week on sunday. she works nights and i days. i'll let her know of both of these and see what happens.
zeszut--I think your friend, with a Win98 OS should get the proper downloads by using the link http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp mentioned by 104456. Has the friend tried it? If you use the link you will be redirected.

It will look like you are starting at a regular Windows Update page, but you are not. You can use it, too.
as i said, i'll pass this info to her sunday when we talk. i wish she would just bite the bullet and get a new computer with xp! the one she has is pretty old.

i printed out all your responses last night and mailed them to her this morning. hopefully, she'll be able to try some of your suggestions before i talk to her sunday.
i never realized how complicated someone's life (hers and, as a result, mine) could be with access to the net!
It could be that she does not have the correct version of windows update installed but connecting to the default address should offer this as the first update.Anyhows I hope at least one solution offered helps :D

she definitely has 98se (my old machine).
but didn't microsoft changed the address of the update page at some point? i seem to remember at some point no longer being able to do updates to 98 until the new address was used. am i remembering this wrong?
anyway, my friend's FIRST update will be the address as coded in the 98se cd which i think has changed.
Even if the default link is old,
Microsoft should have a server at the other end redirecting it to a current one...

hey, gang, we HAVE a solution.
talked to my friend this morning and she said that she's now connected to the net WITH all windows security updates applied successfully. i asked if she had followed the links you guys suggested. she hemmed and hawwed saying that she's embarassed to tell me what the problem turned out to be. finally she told me ... it turns out that when she installed 98 she neglected to change the year when windows asked her what year it was. she changed the day and month but neglected to change the year. according to her computer, it's 2016.
she corrected the year and, voila, everything is copacetic. somehow that was interfering with her updates.

I installed this today and it screwed up my computer. Reinstalled my ghost image and all was ok then. I then d/l'd this again but only installed the optimizer and computer is still working. Use at your own risk!Quote:

Strange that zeszut it usually states to check system time and date as part of an web update error message if that is a possibly update failure.Anyhow glad its working and I'm sure she wont do it again :D
